sounds like it might be starving for fuel. Check the fuel pump and it might possibly need a carb rebuild. If you feather the throttle to take off will it run?

choose edit then to to advanced edit and you can change the header. If the plugs are wet it might be getting to much fuel which still leads me to a carb rebuild. Wet plugs can be a weak spark. How long since the plugs have been changed?

When it dies, it starts right back up? Fuel line holding pressure?

Does it rev up in neutral (don't rev it up past 2000 or so on muffs)?

What led you to conclude the ignition switch was faulty?

That motor will idle on 5, maybe even 4 cylinders and sound perfectly happy doing so. Cylinder drop test: engine idling, use an insulated or plastic tool to pull then reconnect the spark plug wires, one at a time. If RPM's don't drop noticeably, that cylinder's not making power.

Spark tester (couple bucks at auto zone), set the gap for 7/16", look for a strong blue spark.

jtexas-it starts right back up after dieing, fuel line is holding pressure, it will not rev up in neutrol, a guy at work said his did the same thing and was the ignition switch, mine was sticking in the start position sometimes so it needed to be replaced anyway. evenrude70hp, the primer bulb is not getting sucked in. thanks for the help guys, im heading out to try everything you`ve mentioned so far right now. btw, how do i by-pass the vro and gas pumps so i can run it on a different tank-with new fuel & oil (50-1)? freddyray 21, the plugs are new.

OK....
Does the timer base move smoothly without sticking all the way to its stop screw when you advance the throttle?
Inspect all the wiring coming off the stator & timer base, look for pinched/chafed wires, burned/missing insulation - a wire maybe rubbing up against something and grounding the ignition when the throttle is advanced.

Sounds like its doing exactly what my johnson 150 vro was doing, Idles great give it gas and dies. I rebuilt the carbs tonight and that fixed the problem. the carbs are easy too. be sure to pull the intermediate jets too, dont overlook those. that was what was the most gummed up on mine. cleaned them up and blew them out w. air compressor and she runs like a champ now.
