help needed with a Johnson 60 HP Outboard

Hello,
I am looking to learn what year the Johnson outboard I just purchased was made.
Model # J60ELCD. Serial# 6712177 OMC

I am thinking it is from the 1980's.

I am also looking fro tips or suggestions, or hunches as to what may be causing the motor to die as soon as I accelerate, ...but engine idols fine.
A compression check shows the middle cylinder to be 40 lbs below the top and bottom cylinder readings. Have you any suggestions on what may be wrong and how to go about repairing it myself?

40 lbs is a lot of difference. what are the top and bottom readings. I would suggest a decarb, but with 40lbs difference it could be a head gasket, broken rings ect
