Well,

I have been trying to solve a no spark issues for weeks. After a good amount of money and a bunch of new parts.... no spark.

This all started with the #4 cylinder not firing. After swapping coils and buying a new coil.... still no spark on #4. Bought a new power pack because everyone thought it was the problem.... Still no spark on #4.... than no spark on any cylinder.

borrowed the DVA voltage adaptor and the stator output was really low.... bought a new stator, guess what.... no spark. Than I was told it had to be the timer base... Well got a great deal on a refurbished timer base... well.....

Still no spark. I am on the verge of setting the engine on fire at least than I might see a spark! My wife is on the verge of kicking me and the boat out...

I have tried everything. the only thing that I have not replaced is all of the coils and the recifier.

Does anyone have ANY good idea what is going on? It still has been cheaper than the shop, but this is just terrible to me. My kids have been dying to go to the lake and everyweek they get there hopes up... but daddy can't make it happen. I work on electronics for a living... I have never had issues like this that I can't solve.

Here is a link to the orginal post....

Without reading all the posts a couple things come to mind -- have you disconnected the large red cannon plug and tested for spark again?

Do you have another flywheel to try?

Yes, I have tried it with out the red plug... I was hoping that it was just the ignition switch.

I do not have another flywheel.

Honestly, it seems like you've got all the bases covered. I guess I'd start taking readings from stator to powerpack, powerpack to coils and coils to plugs. See if you can find where the issue is.

Re: Any Ideas????

That engine having magneto capacitance discharge ignition, must turn (crank) over with the starter at least 300 rpms in order for the stator to energize the capacitor within the powerpack.

Should that engine crank over slower than 300 rpms, the result would be no spark (ignition).

This is the reason all spark plugs should be removed when testing for spark, to allow the highest rpm available.

When testing for spark, with the spark plugs removed, is there any kind of spark..... and if so, exactly what does it look like?

Re: Any Ideas????

NO SPARK ON ANY CYLINDER:

1. Disconnect the black/yellow stop wire and retest. If the engine's ignition has spark, the stop circuit has a fault-possibly the key switch, harness or shift switch.
2. Disconnect the yellow wires from the rectifier and retest. If the ignition now has spark, replace the rectifier.
3. Check the stator and trigger resistance and DVA output as given below:

Wire Color: Check to Wire Color :Resistance: DVA Reading

Brown wire: Brown/Yellow wire :450-550 :150V or more Connected
Orange wire: Orange/Black wire :450-550** :150V or more Connected
White wire: Purple :1.1M-2.4M ^^: 0.6V or more Connected
White wire: Blue wire :1.1M-2.4M ^^ :0.6V or more Connected
White wire: Green wire: 1.1M-2.4M ^^ :0.6V or more Connected

** NOTE: Some engines use a 50 or a 100 ohms power coil.
^^ This reading will vary according to the meter used. Do a comparison reading and if there is a difference of over 10%, replace the timer base. (which i guess you already did!) Typically, use the Red meter lead to the White wire and the Black wire to the other wires.

Check the cranking RPM. A cranking speed of less than 250-RPM will not allow the system to spark properly. (As Joe already said)

Well, Just wanted to let everyone know... The engine is finally running! Turns out that the "new" stator I bought on Ebay turned out to be a bad stator. once I figured out it was bad, I put a good used one on and she fired right up.

I wanted to thank everyone for all there help with this nightmare.

You all are a great group and I feel lucky I stumbled on this forum.

Thank you all!

One thing to consider, I got a brand new CDI stator that had the wires in the wrong locations in the plug. Took me a couple hours of head scratching to figure out why my motor ran on the old stator but had no spark with the new one. Might want to check out your e-bay stator before you write it off. Just a thought.
