1963 5.5 seahorse. complete gasket set, plugs, wires, points, condensers, carb kit, float, impeller, thermostat... I didnt replace coils. Can I ohm them to see if ok? engine started fine but abruptly stopping at high rpm if sustained more than 1 or 2 min. Stops very quickly. good fuel, vented tank... When it dies, I can start it up immediatly. when grounding ignition at high rpm, it quickly slows down and stops. When disconnecting fuel at high rpm, it quickly slows down and stops. Did this to determine fuel or ignition symptom. It just stops so fast it seems like it is trying to lock up. If I throttle it down the exact second it is ready to stall, it will recover. Any ideas???

what color were the coils?are they a chalky white or a yellowish color? their no good.any cracks ,no good.if they are original, they are most likely on their way out.

The coils are green, however they physically look good. I wanted to find out if I could test them somehow. BTW, NONE of the stalling issues happened until I changed over the ignition. I thought that since it was able to reach max rpm now, something else may be the prob... I should know better... It also is a little bit harder to start now than before the rebuild...

A mechanic was telling me it was due to heat. I dont agree. The motor circulates great, water temp outlet never exceeds 110f at higher rpm, and 90f at idle. I'ts just binding up instantly at high rpm.

Shock absorber? Is that going to be like a shock buffer? A rubber snubber of some sort. I thought that the shaft from the powerhead connected directly through the pump housing, impeller and then into the lower unit directly splined to the gear. after it stops, I can instantly restart it with no apparent friction. Plugs in, plugs out, it turns over the same.

FR, did they have the shocks in '63? I thought they stopped em in the 50's? I'm pretty sure my '61 doesn't have one...

I have the '63 parts book here in front of me. It has the shock absorber.

I think all the 5.5s had them. They did away with it on the later 6hp models, using a rubber hub propeller instead.

I have a 1961 5.5Hp and it definitely has a shock absorber.
