I just purchased (in the spring) a 1989 Four Winns 201 Liberator w/ a 5.7L Chevy small block (OMC sterndrive). The boat has been running great up until the last 2x.

Problem:
* The boat stalls on random occasions, I can be coasting from 1,000 or less RPM's or I can be cruising @ 2,500+ RPM's

* The boat will start up after several attempts, it seems that I have best success when I remove the caborator cover and force the choke.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1st Boat

Welcome to Iboats!

My first thoughts would be bad fuel. Do you have a water separator filter on it?
I would change the fuel filters and put a can or two of Seafoam in the tank.At least thats where to start to diagnose the problem.

clean the filters, change the fuel, seafoam and make sure you winterize it with sta-bil, in tank and run a few min to get in the carb. your carb is probly varnished up, thats if it was never winterized last winter. old dried up fuel in the carb will make it run bad

I do not have a water separator filter on it but that is on my list to start with.
I have used 2 12oz btls of ISO-HEET, but my next step is to use Seafoam.

I also have changing the fuel filter and fuel pump on my list as well, but I was told today that it may be electrical because the boat just shuts down with no warning signs of fuel starvation. I never have changed anything on an engine before, is the filter and fuel pump fairly easy to change out or should I just take it in?

since it stalls randomly. i think i'd suspect some kinda faulty ign. a short. think i'd start by makeing sure every ign. connection has nice, clean, shiny terminal and connector..........fuel filters are good to replace. fuel pumps useally are kinda pricey to replace. maybe do some tests on the fuel system first prior to replacement.....
