If you swallow your pride, doesn't that make you full of pride, and doesn't that defeat the purpose in the first place?

Not in my mind. If you have a lot of pride and are in a situation where you should swallow your pride and don't, you've just lost your pride and must build it back up again. If instead you identify the situation as one where you should just swallow said pride, your store of pride is replenished to be used again ASAP. Doesn't defeat the purpose at all.

I don't think your pride ever gets you into trouble. However, its evil twin.......ego (often mis-identified as pride) does.
The statement should say that you have swallow your ego....pride is all good usually.
