1980 70hp mercury outboard

we were having problems with getting any accelleration. we changed the diaphrams and tested compression. compression has a difference of ten in each like the manual says. now the boat only runs with the motor cover off... don't know what to do now... does anyone have any insight?

It sounds like the idle mix is to rich, does it smoke, does it restart with out a choke then its rich, if you need to choke for a restart then is lean

another thing. if we pump the prime then it works fine... would it still be too rich? it does smoke and it does restart without choke... thanks for any help

When you telegragph the prime and it helps then the engine is lean, so you have carbs that need adjustment or cleaning.
