:redface:I need to change the fuel lines/hoses to my outboard. When I looked to get the size off the hose one section was 5/16 motor side of the primer ball and on the tank side it was 3/8 . What is the correct size for a 1992 Evinrude 85 hp outboard tiller with oil injection? If I go with the 3/8 do I need to be concerned with what that does to the oil mixture? I imagine it was all calibrated at the factory with how much fuel goes through the line. While changing the hoses I was going to add a water seperator as well. This would go onto the tank side of the primer ball correct?

Most hoses are 3/8 and that doesn't have anything to do with the oil injection. Water seperator goes between the tank and primer bulb.

Re: Gas lines????Please help

Thank you for the help Bill, Seloc Repair Manual was the first thing that I purchased after the boat. I did refer to the owners manual as well as the Seloc. The owners is calling for 5/16 and the Secloc is calling for 3/8, the boat has both. So I'm sure you can see how this might be a little confusing to the beginner. I guess the better question would have been, " If I am adding the extra filter would the fuel flow be restricted too much with the 5/16 and would I be better served with the 3/8 if this doesn't negatively effect the mixture of oil?":)

Neither size line will affect the flow of the mixture and either size will work fine on your 85 HP engine. But if it were me, I would use 3/8" line and put the filter between the tank and the bulb as suggested...

My 50 hp takes a 3/8" hose
My 6 hp takes a 5/16" hose

Both engines work fine on either hose.

Thank you all for the help. I will go with the 3/8. I have been looking into the installation of this water separator nothing has ever been mentioned about a shut off valve before the filter. I was thinking that this might be a good idea for when it comes time to change the filter to keep fuel from running all over the place and reduce the pressure during replacement. good or bad idea??

Motors up to, and including, V4 crossflows will be fine with 5/16" ID hose. 3/8" ID is even better.

The main problem with shut off valves is the ID. Most have very small passages and that can create a fuel restriction. Unless the filter is below the tank it won't flow fuel when you take the filter off.

MMMM, thats got me wondering. My 175 has 5/16 hose from the primer ball to the engine. The rest is 3/8th. Could that be my low WOT problem?
Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread....

:):)Gary you didn't highjack anything. The more information the more I learn. It was actually nice to see I wasn't the only one.

Re: Gas lines????Please help

I never really thought about it.When i bought the boat the previous owner had put a new ball and line goint to the motor.
I replaced all the 3/8 line with new because it was cracking bad.
The ball and hose that connects to the engine was a pre made deal with the clamps pressed on.
I guess i need to look for a ball with 3/8th fittings on both ends and the connector for the motor..?

Definately get a bulb with 3/8" fittings. That can make a huge difference.

I guess a drive over to West marine..(god i hate that place)..they are just way out of line on the prices.
