I have a 1990 40hp johnson outboard, when I turn the key to on the alarm goes right to a constant, high pitched, annoying tone, no breaks, this all started after my battery had died and I had to rope start it, the first couple of rope starts it was fine, then on maybe the 5th rope start the constant beep started as soon as the key was turned to on (no normal check beep, goes straight to the constant tone), and continues to stay on while running any speed until the key is turned off, I have searched this problem and can't find a duplicate problem of the alarm being constant, unbroken and so annoying, any ideas?I forgot to add that now the battery is in tip top condition and I start it with the key the alarm is still the same.

Re: steady alarm beep

Check to see that the TAN wire is connected to the push on terminal closest to the built in BLACK ground wire. If connected to the other terminal, weird things will happen.

If the TAN wire is where it belongs, having the key to the ON position and the horn beeping, remove that TAN wire from the horn.

If the beeping continues, the horn is faulty, in which case, replace it.

If the beeping stops when you remove that TAN wire, then the problem is elsewhere. I'd suggest that you reconnect that TAN wire and with the horn beeping, start disconnecting the sensor components at the engine to find the faulty component.

Re: steady alarm beep

thanks for the advice, I discoed the tan wire from the horn and it continued screaming, so I take that to mean the horn is bad, boy is that thing even louder with the control box open, I think I had dogs a couple blocks away howling, todays the holiday, hopefully this is an easy part to find, wanna hit the river on thursday. If a guy would want to totally disable that horn, is it don by just unhooking both wires? and is there any adverse effects other than no warnings about oil, heat and such, I keep a close eye on my motor and I think I could do without the warnings. thanks again for the help

No, beleive me...... You cannot do without the warning horn. Regardless of how carefull one might be, the end result would be a blown powerhead.

The warning horn keeps you informed of Overheating, Fuel Restrictions, Low Oil Level, Air In The Oil Line, Oil Restriction, and Pump Failure. Would you disconnect the engine warning light or oil gauge in your automobile? Think about it.
