50HP Evinrude won't idle

Ok, I am an extreme newbie at this but here goes. I've got a 50 HP 2 cylce evinrude with an oil reservoir, and it will not idle all the time. Here's what I've noticed -

No matter how many times I press the primer bulb it doesn't get hard. It remains soft. If I raise the idle speed from the shifter I can get it to start, but it barely idles for a few minutes and then after running for a few moments it will pick up speed to a fast idle. When I depress the fast idle it eventually dies. If by some chance I get it into gear - I can take it all the way up to full throttle and it runs great, but once I bring that to low speed it will eventually die.

I'm thinking about replacing the tank, bulb, and fuel hose to the motor as a start - any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I believe your problem lies more in your carbs. When is the last time they were rebuilt? You are flooding your carbs by continually pumping your bulb, the carbs need to be set up properly, do you have a manual? If not it will be a wise and cheap investment that will pay for itself many times over. Are you sure the fuel is not leaking somewhere from the bulb to the fuel pump? Any air leaks in any of the fuel lines, listen closely.

I had the same problem. I agree with HT who recommended the same to me and it worked great. Not very difficult with the manual and patience.

you should be able to find a manual on this site. its not that difficult to rebuild just take your time and have patience.

Go to www.outboardbooks.com for a factory service manual, or check ebay for a used copy. No substitute for the real thing.

Need the year model of you motor to find a manual Mate . I would replace the primer bulb first . If it won't pump up and get hard - chances are the diaphram is bad between the bulb and the tank . Go to wal-Mart and pick up a new one for 7 or 8 bucks and try that first . Even if it's not a complete fix for your problem - changing the bulb is a good idea occasionally .
