The engine is a GM 3.0 liter 4 banger......a really dependable little 140 HP.
You really have to work hard to FUBAR one of those.

That's some good information to know..To answer your question...

It goes inside a 17'-18' Renken Fiberglass boat. It was given to me for FREE. It sat-up for 2-3 years and I broght her home and put about 8 hours of elbow grease into her and she shined right up. The hull is in great shape and the gel cote is still shinny on the boat....here are some pictures.

(p.s all those stains in the pictures came out with some Tilex and elbow grease.)

Since it has not been fired up in a while my plan is to:

1. Change engine oil and filter, spark plugs
2. Drain and change gear oil.
3. Put mufflers on her and crank her up.

Anything else that is greatly needed to fire her up?

The only thing wrong that I know of is that the tilt and trim is not working to keep the outdrive up. I think the switch is bad due to the post I have read here so far.

First I'd get rid of the ex-gas that's in it.
Then, I'd pull the drive, lube splines, check gimble bearing, check the ujoints, check the bellows, turn drive over by hand to see if it's free, and put a new impeller in it.

Change engine oil and filter, spark plugs

Ayuh,..... After Bomar's advice,.......

I'll add maybe you want to turn the motor over on the Starter,.....
30/ 45 seconds should do......Maybe a couple of times with long breaks in between......

After the Oil Change,...... With the Sparkplugs Out,+ the Outdrive Off.......;)

The block is an Iron Duke... and a great block. They are however prone to cracking under the intake manifold if they aren't winterized correctly. If you haven't done so and haven't already fired it up. look/touch/smell/feel up under the intake manifold before you put any money into the boat.

Those are great suggestions, however I just want to make sure she fires up before investing any money and time into her.

Thanks for the advise on getting the old gas out of it. If forgot about that.

Would changing the plugs, oil, and gear lube be sufficient for getting her started and running to check for other problems? I am not sure what kind of condition the carbs are in..probably a little gunked up..do you think some starter fluid would be a good work around to fire her up? Do I need to clean the carbs first? I wish I had the money to send her to the shop and get a full make-over, since I have very little experience, but the funds are low and this is just a project for me...

I looked at the intake and it seems solid. Also, it looks like the boat has not been used that much or that whoever had it tood very good care of it. I did notice a very small about of oil and water mix underneath the engine. Not sure if it was spilled while draining or filling. Looks like the heads are good, no oil leaking around them.

Here are my question again:

Would changing the plugs, oil, and gear lube be sufficient for getting her started and runnig to check for issues?

Do you think some starter fluid would be a good work around to fire her up?

Do I need to clean the carbs first?

Any advise?

I would hook up a six gallon tank filled with fresh fuel directly to the fuel inlet & pour some fuel directly into the carb....
Starting fluid is bad for the engine.....
Change the oil & do what Bondo said....
IE pull the plugs & spin the engine a little to get the oil where it needs to be before attempting to start it......
See if it will start before ya go changing a bunch of stuff.....;)

So after the oil change, i will need to pull the plugs out to get the oil where in needs to go. Then put the plugs back in and then try to fire her up?

Yes, it will allow the oil to flow to where it needs to be without the potential of the engine starting.....
& it will also keep any stress off the parts from compression....
You want to keep the rpm's down until ya get oil to where it needs to go.....
After sitting for awhile all of the oil will drain from the bearings, etc.....
It would not hurt to put a sqirt or two right into the cylinders while the plugs are out.....;)

The block is an Iron Duke...

Incorrect, the 2.5/3.0 used by Merc/OMC was NOT the iron duke engine. The iron duke was a 2.5 with cross-flow heads. His engine, either 2.5/3.0 looks like a 194/250/292 inline 6 missing two clyinders.

Darn, I was so looking forward to telling everyone that it was an Iron Duke. It just sounds cool.

Any confirmation on what I truly have inside my boat?
