I am looking into buying a Sea Ray with the 165hp inline 6. This will be my first real boat besides some little fishing boats. Any advice regarding the durability of this motor, performance, recomended prop in a 19' Seville for general use?

I have perused the forums and can't find too many complaints, but I do wonder why this motor doesn't seem to be available anymore, simply GM stopped making it for trucks I guess?

Thanks for any info.

Ayuh,........

I Think that Merc quit using that motor Long before Chevy quit Building it,.....
And,.......
Long before 1987 as Well.......

So,........
It would seem to Me,... That this is some sort of Mongrel boat......
I really Don't believe that is the Original motor........

Time is Why you don't see more of them,....
They Were a Great little motor that'll run, Danm near Forever.......

Actually the Mercruiser parts book shows the in-line six 165hp as late as 1981.Sure surprised me.But no later than that.

They couldn't make money on motors that wouldn't quit so they built some that would:)

I have one in my 1970 Starcraft Chieftain. It has close to 1500 hours on it and compression is still good. Very nice running motor.

best memory serves merc quit using the inline 6 in the late seventies very early eighties.
best I can remember why is GM quit building the seperate head manifold version and only used the head with a cast in manifold. made for a water cooled manifld option about impossible..
taken care of it was a good engine, however most were. mcm470 series notwithstanding.

My guess is that the 87 165 engine is actually the 4 cylinder 470 style engine, not the IL 6.
Those writing the add probably "Assumed" it was a 6 cylinder.

UHM Right, yes I am a newbie I looked at the pic closer and can see only 5 wires out of the distributor so it is a 4 cylinder.
