Specs to start: 1970's 33 HP Evinrude with electric start on a 16 ft. fiberglass

I'm wondering if someone can help me. My dad has a fiberglass boat that was dry docked for 3 years - and no, he never winterized it (we live in northern ontario). This summer we put some ear muffs on it and the engine started almost right away so we dumped it into the lake.

When my dad and I went out the first time, we were going at proper speed in choppy water. We took it out for about 15 mins (5 mins full out) and it was all cool. The next day I went out myself and the motor wouldn't go past a troll speed when it was opened full up. I couldn't even make a wake.

Would anyone have any recommendations as to what we could look into fixing that maybe causing this problem?

So were you able to push the throttle to WOT? What did it do when you did this?

could be dirty jets? I have a 1972 125hp that wouldn't go past a trolling speed, my jet's were royally gummed up. maybe when you took your boat out for the first run you losend up gunk and now thier clogged. Quick clean or carb kit never hurts. Just a thought, good luck.

Spark Check, compression check. Those pass it's probably the carbs. Sounds like you had a cylinder cut out though. Did ya look at the plugs at all?

Not knowing all the details it is hard to pinpoint the source of your problem, however I had ran into the same situation a few years ago with a 15 hp I took out of storage. I found running fresh gas through the carb., the first time out, caused sediment from the float bowl to loosen up and clog the main jet. I think it would be a good idea to clean and rebuild the carburetor.
Good luck.

Check the ignition. It's running on one cylinder. The carb on a a single-carb engine doesn't cause that, because it feeds both cylinders.

Thanks for all the ideas. I've rebuilt the carb and replaced a fuel pump. Plugs are clean and compression is perfect.

Thinking I may need to replace the electical coils.

Any other ideas?

Does it run well in neutral? If so check the lower oil. If water infiltrated it could be having a lot of resistance when under load and about to lock up. Besides oils cheap and its always a good idea to change the gear oil on a motor that's sat for a long period.
