loss of power/bad gas or stator?

I have a 88 sea ray with a 100hp engine. Today I amn out and it wont get over 3000 rpms with 5 people in it. I drop the people off and then the motor will go to 3000 halt for a min then contenuie to 4200 i can barley get on a plane. If i put the engine in neutral it will rev to 6500 no problem it is only when it is underload.
This never happened before also it seems there is more oil coming out of the engine then there was before. The engine also sounds a little different... any help would be awesome. The day this started I had rain water full in the boat and it was above my gas take. Maybe it oculd be water in the tank?

also i have never ran the boat past a half tank so the gas maybe old?

i would drain the gas could be water then when you fill it back up add a can of seafoam it will help clean out yor carb

The stator can quite easly be checked by checking the voltage with a dva or peak stevens meter but I would guess you would not have acess to one of these tools. If you get your hands on a manual you can get the resistance reading for the high stator coil measurement. This will be a measurement of resistance for the red and red/white lead from the stator. This should give you fair indication if the stator is o.k. . However my guess is that the carbys are the likely cause as when the stator is faulty, rpms increase to aprox 3000 then die back as the voltage requirement under wot increases and the ignition system canot supply and in some cases the engine stalls compleatly. The second reason is you have told us that water has been present around your fuel tanks. Check engine is firing on all cylinders at max rpm if not check that carby asociated with the particular cylinder. In short more liklely fuel not spark BEST OF LUCK MATE!

Wouldn't hurt to take a look at the spark plugs, what color are they, how old are they?

Partialy fouled plug can act like a rev limiter under load, yet rev freely in neutral.

Check spark on all cyl's, weak, continue on to checking the stator, if bright blue crisp arc, replace the blackened nasty fouled plugs and try it again before spending any money on spendy electrical parts.

Hook up an aux tank with fresh gas and see how that goes first.

Also was the primer bulb flat? Did you try pumping the bulb?

primer bulb is full i just pulled the plugs all is well.... any so i am going to drain the gas today/.... Also I pulled the carb cover and there was some oil in the intake...

A little oil in the airbox doesn't scare me, the carbs 'flood' a bit when the engine is tilted all up, the airbox holds it and a recirc line pulls it in and burns it during normal operation.

Since you have the airbox open now is a great time to checck for flooding carb (s), trim the motor til the carb is level or slightly forward so ANY flooding runs out the front and is easy to see, squeeze the primer bulb and watch the throats for even the slightest amount of gas leaking out into the airbox.

This is also a final step after rebuilding/cleaning/installing carbs, just to be sure it's all OK

i put asome seafoam in and it ran a little better.. would using regular 2 stroke oil vs marine 2 stroke cause this ?

No regular 2-stroke oil. You want to use TCW3 certified marine 2-stroke oil. The other stuff is for air cooled engines.

How long would you like to go between rebuilds?

'Standard' oils will work, for a shorter time.
