Fuel tank problem?

Recently my 19' 1985 Celebrity has developed a problem starting.

If I pump the throttle multiple times it will try to start but will not keep running. I know I am not flooding the motor because there are no gas fumes in the engine compartment when this happens. This is very obviously an issue with the motor getting fuel. If I add a couple of gallons to the tank it starts and runs fine even at full speed. This has happened twice in the last week.
At first I assumed that my fuel gauge or sending unit was faulty and I was actually out of gas, however when I went to fill the 40 gallon tank yesterday it only held 10 gallons or so, confusing the heck out of me.

I am unsure of how the fuel pickup works but could it be broken? Possibly a bad fuel pump?

Welcome to iboats......:)
Have you changed the water separating fuel filter?....
Is there any fuel in the clear hose that runs from the fuel pump to the carb?.......
The fuel pick up can be located by following the fuel line that leads to the water separater......
There is usually an acess port in the deck........
Pick up tubes can break.....
The screen on the bottom can clog.....
The fuel vent can clog.....
The screeen at the carb can clog.....
& the anti siphon valve can clog......
In your case, I would hook up a portable 1 gallon tank & see if it cures it........
Then you will know which direction to look for a cause......;)
