Hello;

I was hoping for some recommendations on what you have all used for a water holding tank for an outboard when running it at home. I am looking to replace my pump/impellor and would like to have something large enough and relatively inexpensive to use before and after. Muffs are not practical where I have my boat stored.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the size of the tank but make sure you have a supply of fresh water running into it...so you don't worry about the water in tank heating up and recycling through the engine.

I always used a big plastic garbage can to run my outboards in that did not have the water pickup on the sides, small outboards.
Like JAL said, just make sure you keep plenty of water in whatever you use.

thanks for the heat tips, did not think of that. i am leaning this direction now, just need to measure for clearance and fit. not starting the motor often enough weighs on me and the repairs i want to do keep getting delayed... luckily the temps out here are buying me some time.. 108+

My buddy abnd I jsut use a plastic rubbermaid trash can. get the thicker wall one ( more of the construction site heavy duty one) we had a cheapie plastic one. Started the boat and the damn can split right at the seam and dumped all the water out. I jsut started laughing standing there with a hose in my hand and soaked. Jumped in the boat and shut off the motor.

Re: 125hp water tank

I went to Walmart and got the biggest rubbermaid tub I could a couple years ago when I did a pig roast. I needed something to keep the pig in for a couple days on ice. After the roast I had this big ol tub and no use for it. Then I started doing work on the boat motor and found that is was the perfect size for the motor. I think I maybe spent like 15 bucks for it.

Re: 125hp water tank

Ok followed the Walmart advice. Bought the largest tub and hope it covered enough of the LU. I will say it started relatively fast then nothing. I looked at the fuel gauge and said can't be, empty? I had lowered the bow so low that it starved out for fuel. I raised the bow full up and bingo. I also will say theres a lot more smoke when the snout is not fully in the water. Lemme know if you all think this is deep enough. BTW, tubs up to $20. Thanks for the help.

How about an additional photo or two showing the whole arrangement a little clearer.
It's hard to tell too much by that photo.

If it was me, I would have more of it in water.
If you put it in gear there, the prop wash will move the water away from the engine some and maybe away from the water pick-up.

Re: 125hp water tank

here are more pics.. i only will use it to run at idle and a short rev to get her nerves up. i dont think it wont handle in gear so wont try it. the tub is at about full, the sides are bulging. its starting up pretty quick now and only running it about 30 sec's. thanks...

DAMN thats a tight fit.

I couldnt really tell from the 1st pic I was gonna say yea, thats OK but just run at idel.

I think you may be able to get away with it but I wouldnt run it long as theres really not that much water in that bucket! It wont take long for it to all turn warm / hot when you start the motor.

I DONT recomend you put it in gear at all as you said you wont be!

Why cant you use muffs right there where it is? NO hose bib?

Re: 125hp water tank

... yup it was pretty tight. it allowed me to get some things done and only ran it a few minutes on idle with a couple manual revs. the water stayed pretty cool. i don't run the muffs due to the mess i'd be standing in after a few minutes of running water. i am looking at a larger stronger tank as this one just didn't feel right. its now full of x-mas junk... :)

AZLAKES
with an outboard motor you may be able to get a Rubbermaid garbage can and cut it in 1/2. It would problably still be stiff enough after its cut down to size to hold up. They may even make a shorty can.

I think it would be pleanty deep enough and round enough to drop the lower unit into and give you a nice reserve of water to run throught that Force motor.

Go to farmers supply. Rubbermade 70 gal tank for $68.00. Works good. I would send a pic of mine if I could figure out how to reduce file size.

Re: 125hp water tank

... found that Home Depot had the metal tank I was seeking $64. Today was a beauty of a day to get it positioned and filled.
Also finally got the Stabil additive in at 2 oz to about 5 gallons of left over fuel from October. Gotta say a lotta smoke started
after about 10 minutes. I was stoked to see the outboard fired up after only a few cranks. I ran it a few times and was able to
get it in gear on this size tank. Couple questions on todays tank test:

1) this much smoke bout right after Stabil kicked in?

2) after priming the bulb to firm, choked the carb by depressing the ign switch and got a trickle of fuel spilling from the carb, outboard fired up and trickle ceased. this normal?

Thanks in advance...

Testing photo attach; Hope it works. Not sure if Stabil causes excess smoke but I have smoke also while using it. Probably normal for trickle of gas after p

riming. After all that's what priming does, loads carbs with fuel.

Well, why the heck the picture so big? And lost some text? Anyway, plastic tank has drain plug and is plenty big, $68.
Now to experiment more with photos (due to boredom).

... not a stupid question. The snout churns up the water some as the impeller displaces water thru it so it may look like the prop is running. When you can engage into gear(forward) the tank really begins to boil but make sure its plenty large for the water will swirl much like a blender laid on its side. I did not like the fit or strength of a large walmart storage bin. No way was i going to engage gear in that thing so I saved up for the metal trough.
