Hi guys:

I am about to buy a Honda BF50, 2003 rebuilt engine for $3000 with controls and remote. I asking myself if this is worth it or should I go for a Merc EFI engine. I am new at this so please give me your opinion. I am looking at something that is good on gas and can push my double eagle 16'. I had a 65 hp 1990 Johnson on it but the compression was poor and the boat could do up to 21 knots.

Is the Honda worth it?

Thanks

If you are buying new give the Evinrude etec a close look.Available in a twin
40,50,60 hp.The honda is a fine motor but I don't think you will be happy
with a 50 after a 65 even a weak 65.Your next consideration is a close qualified servicing dealer.

$3000 is not a bad price for the motor. New Merc EFI is going to run you up around $6000.

I would make sure 50 is enough HP. Sounds like you are rated for more than that. Performance on 4 stroke and 2 stroke differ. 2 stroke is going to be better on dead start, and changing from 65 2S to 50 4S might surprise you.

The etech 40/50/60 are all same weight, so I would look hard at the 60 you like the etec. More HP for same weight is a good thing.

Merc 50/60 are both the same footprint as well. EFI is the only way to go if you ask me. I am running my second EFI Merc, and I previosuly had a Honda 30. Also, Honda does not make a 60.

Etec is two cylinder, and the merc is going to have 4. Both are good motors. Honda is good motor too, but it does not have EFI.
