This is/was probably my strangest aquatic event, finding a drowned man in the lake. It occurred about 25+ years ago.
I guess he had been out partying at his pre-marital stag party at a dockside mini-hotel place...got drunk and decided to go out in his boat. Well, apparently he tried to take a leak over the side and fell in and drowned. He disappeared for 2-3 weeks and when he re-appeared....voila', me and a friend of mine found him.
He looked pretty ghoulish...but we more curious and surprised than disturbed by it although a lot of people asked how we were doing about it all. No problem (to our knowledge?).
The cops who actually finally got him out of the water had a lot harder time with it I think...based on watching the two of them on all fours throwing up on the beach afterwards.
I thought something was up the morning that he actually drowned because I was out cruising around very early on the lake in my boat and I saw a boat sitting there in the shallows/weeds still running with no apparently on it. I didn't think to look into further at the time...however that was his boat. A couple hours later there were was a helicopter and obviously the local cop boat out on the lake looking for him.
That must have been a hard day for his fiance'.
Good lesson in that event tho'....on the mixing boozing/boating business.

If they catch you drinking and driving a boat its just like you were in your car on main street....It doesnt seem right that you get a DWI that will raise your car insurance just because you were in a boat.........One time while out in y boat I turned up my bottle of wild turkey for a big ole drink and as I lowered it a big cabin cruiser had cut in front of me and the guy was waving his hands like crazy for me to see him before I smacked into his port side. I had the right of way you know. You see some crazy people on the river sometimes.

If your too stubborn to follow the above tips, at a LEAST please **** in an empty beer bottle THEN dump it over the side.

Its not like your not going to have an empty laying around anyways, right?

If a body has been in the water for a few weeks, it kind of comes apart when you grab hold to pull it. Yech! (gag, barf, etc)

I found a "floater" about 10 years ago.It was a kid that was killed and they threw the body off the bridge. The cops had searched for over 2 weeks dragging around the bridge.Knowing the river system like i do i thought the body would be down stream a few miles.
Went out to fish that day and found him snagged on a tree in a cove.Went to the marina and
called the cops and they were there in about 5 minutes. They still had boats in the water. It was REALLY GROSS!!! Yuck!! Amazing how a small kid about 17 years old swelled up so big.
Every time i fish near that spot it kind of gets my skin crawling...

My cousin was arrow head hunting, I believe he was using an aluminum boat when he came across 2 skeletons on shore . He may not of been in the boat at the time he found them. I asked if they called the police and they said no, from what he had studied of them they were old Indian remains. If it was me I would of called the police. I don't know how I would react if I found a dead body in the water.

Must have had an oversized fuel cell if the motor was still running after 2 - 3 weeks !!

Yeah, I'm surprised that JD missed that too. I saw the 'deceased's boat the morning he drowned...not 2-3 weeks later when we actually discovered him. Either way.....he unfortunately bit it.

I have a freind that dredged up a body in a shrimp trawl, near New Orleans. It was an obvious "hit" as the body was bound and gagged. He hasn't been trawling since.

...coming across a hit victim would freak me out I'm sure. Thats a complete different event than what my experience was. I think the basic term of what I/we discovered was 'death by misadventure' which removes the mysterious element behind the event.
The body was a bit ghoulish but not obliterated at all so not too freaky. I was younger too and more fascinated than weirded out I think. Although I had a lot of people 'checking me out' for my general response and condition, feelings etc afterwards...it was all somewhat of a non-issue for me. Not freaky just a bit weird and fascinating. I'd take it a lot more serious these days I'm sure....but as a 15 year old (If I recall correctly) it didn't register too much.

Dealing with this sort of thing is a mixed bag of emotions. Its hard to view and have to deal with but I think there are two things that help people get through it - first that you know that you could not have influenced the outcome of the original accident and, second, that what you are really accomplishing is to give the family peace of mind.
