If you don`t bugger up the outer alum. race,if you do the bearing won`t seat fully and will knock with the u joints

You have to drive on the outer race of the bearing ONLY, not the inner race.
It would take a very large socket to do that.

The real answer is both might work. The last thing you want to do is put any pressure on anything but the outer edge of the assembly.

So if I used a wood router on a piece of plywood and took out enough material so it would only push on the outside, then I could just go ahead and line up the grease hole and hammer it on in there eh?

I'm asuming you just hammer until it bottoms out?

In concept I think you are on the right track, but the fit is too tight for wood to be a strong enough 'driver'.

I do freeze the bearing first,if time allows. But that probably is because my shoulders ache so much more than anything else.

I was thinking maybe a metal or heavy PVC pipe.

a piece of 3/4 brass 12" long works well.
like DonS said. only hit the carrier not the inner bearing . you will hear the change of tone when the bearing is seated.

couple of things i did; put the bearing in a plastic bag in the freezer overnite to shrink the outer race. get some graphite lubricant from the parts store and smear it on the bore of the housing to keep galling away. heat the housing with a hair dryer to expand it. be sure the grease hole is aligned. align the motor shaft to the bearing inner ring with the alignment tool. the inner ring "gimbals" or moves. it will be snug and need some force to align it.

I also used the PVC method and it worked great.

I made a driver with a couple of black iron fittings from my local hardware store. I think that it was a 4" to 2" threaded reducer. From that piece I attached an 8" section of 2" pipe with a threaded cap.

I did have to spend some time with a file/sandpaper to get the business end of the reducer flat, as there were some casting marks. A lathe would have been a nice thing to have at that point.

It also works as a good upper body workout when doing the job alone....
