After your test drive, HIRE a mechanic to check out the engine and drive unit.

Spend $150 now, to avoid spending $5,000 a few month down the road.

Re: Picking up my first boat Wednesday..maybe...

Best advice you'll ever hear...

Bring someone with you that knows something about boats! You'll be surprised what people will do for a case of beer.

I promise you bringing a knowledgable friend with you will result in one of two things:

1) They'll prevent you from buying a lemon.

OR

2) Their knowledge will result in more negotiating room at the time of purchase.

Most people use an agent when buying a house cuz there's a lot of stuff they know that you don't. Same thing goes for buying a boat (especially used!).

Sir, I have removed your signature because we do not allow any business adverts in them.
Thanks

Re: Picking up my first boat Wednesday..maybe...

Aye, aye Tashasdaddy, will do. I thought it was valid question as the post is not really about OMC but advice about buying a new boat. Bond-O made his point to advice not to buy OMC and he and other give the explanation why not to buy OMC. Other gave their opinion on why it was ok to buy OMC. Didn't see any objections to that so when Ziggy included the Merc 470 in the “motor not to buy” but neither he nor anyone explain why not I felt compelled to ask. I thought it would not only help me, but also the OP with his quest for buying a new boat and being informed.

Sorry nvardis, did not meant to hijack your thread.

Re: Picking up my first boat Wednesday..maybe...

Hey guys...

Went to look at the boat yesterday....

Heres the problems.

1)There are 2 weak spots on the floor. I did alot of research last night on floor replacement, and i know i can do it.
2)No life jackets

It started right up.....He de-winterized it right in front of me. He put the propeller thing on it he put it in gear for me. It went right in forward and right in reverse just fine. It has one of those little depth screens that i really dont know what its for.

The motor is quieter than my car. The seats are in good shape just maybe alittle faded. It is over 20 years old.

He told me he would take it out on the river sunday with me. I threw him an offer of 1200 like you guys said and he hasnt gotten back to me yet.

I dunno if i should buy it or not.

He said we can go out on the water. I liked it. It needs alittle work. Its a big boat (remember 19 1/2 feet). He said he had 8 people in there comfortably. The metal and floor under the engine looked good. He worked all of the controls on the guage panel and everything worked. All of the lights came on. The storage units on the floor looked good.

Let me know what you guys think.

Re: Picking up my first boat Wednesday..maybe...

BTW: the bellows are a year old...He had the reciepts.

And they looked good.

the temp looked good. The oil pressure looked good. The rmps looked good. The cover is a year old. Its a 2 piece. You can cover the front and leave the back open. The trailer is a wheel on trailer. The little crank thing ( lol ) on the front of the trailer is rusted over and looks like it needs replaced but still works.

The tires on the trailer have good tread. Underneath the boat has some scratches but that seems normal from what ive been reading.

If the floors are soft, your gonna be at least replacing the floor. My guess is the stringers too. While not hard, it is time consuming. If you can get it for 1200, have the space, time, and skills, plus this boat is what you want then I say go for it.

Right now I'm in the middle of a stringer project. I have a few threads going with questions, but this one http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=221565 has a few pictures of what you are in for.

I would budget at least another $1000 for repairs, so your boat is now a $2200 boat. I also think $1000 is a bit low, but that's what I sold my wife when I was boat shopping.

it looked like the reason he was getting rid of it was because he has a jet ski, a motorcycle, a camper, and a job...lol

I would buy a $20 tool at AutoZone and do a compression check on the engine before I bought it.

With him putting it in gear in the driveway ... I would question how well he has taken care of it. Just my opinion.

Re: I looked at the boat...........edit

did he hook up a water hose from his house to the boat?

when a boat is sitting on the trailer, there's no resistance against the drive or prop. there's a big difference once you get it in the water. temp, oil pressure, rpm's mean almost nothing in the driveway.

do you know how long the boat has been sitting? trailer tires will rot and age sitting still, even with all of their tread.

new cover is nice but it's a little like buying a house because you like the color. this boat has me wondering if the cover isn't worth more than the boat.

it's not uncommon to pick up scratches on a hull, accidents happen. many boats have none though. are there a few isloated scrapes or does it look like he used to drive it up on shore to 'beach it'? it is possible to wear through the fiberglass, sand isn't soft. if he was banging the hull into docks and the sand, what was he doing with the engine?

did you ask him why he's selling? how did the engine compartment look?...clean and shiney, or oily and a mess? what about under the seats? try removing the seat cushions and standing on the floor there if possible. wet vests often end up under seat cushions at the end of the day, not good.

get some pics! when he takes you out on it, make a note of the rpm's at wide open throttle, temp, oil pressure.

like lucky said, compression test would be preferred. all you do is take the spark plugs out and put the tester in their place.

did you want to buy a boat to use or to work on?

edit: sorry that was long, not trying to be a pain in the butt. just don't want you missing your hard earned cash.

Thanks for the reply..

The engine compartment didnt look bad. The engine wasnt oily..just needed cleaned up alittle bit.

The fiberglass underneat the boat didnt look worn through at all. If it did...is it fixable? My best friend is a body man (i know i know...totally different when it comes to boats) but he fixed a fiberglass body kit on my car that i smashed and i asked him if he could make boat repairs and he said hes seen it done and doesnt know why he cant do it.

As far as buying it..i want to get a boat and fix it up and make it my baby. I want something to work on. Its the best way to learn for me. HANDS ON

We will be going out on the water sunday....

If the hull is in good shape, no blisters or delamination and the engine is in good shape, you should be in good shape if you get it for a realy good price. Have a mechanic look at the engine, or as suggested, do some of your own checks. Check compression, check the oil to make sure you haven't inhereted a cracked block, etc. Also, inspect the drive. These are the 3 most expensive things on a boat. The floor can be expensive, but "easy" to fix. If you do it right, it will last for as long as you own the boat.

Take a rubber hammer with you and tap on the transom from one side to the other,if you hear a dull thud then transom rot is in there.
The soft spots in the floor would worry me.Under the floor could very well be water logged foam and rotten stringers which would require a complete rebuild of the boat.
Too many good used boats out there to buy a rotted boat with an OMC power unit...
Just my opinion..
The boat in my avatar was 1100 bucks, then i replaced the lower unit on the engine, then had to replace the transom.
It came with the trailer...all together i have a little under 3k in it with a new cover, new stereo, fishfinder and a bunch of other small stuff...
I sold my perfect running OMC to buy it...;)

First of all, make sure your not getting ripped off. Run the motor (with muffs of course), take a small sample of the lower unit oil and make sure its black and has not metal particles in it, check the compression, jump up and down on the floor and check for softspots, check for rot in the paneling and etc
what condition is the trailer in? are the bearings ok?
Other than that, it could turn out to be a great boat.
When i was 13 i used my hardearned grass cutting money ($350) to buy a 1970 Lonestar Cadet with a 1972 Johnson 35. Now im sixteen and proud owner of a '82 Glassmaster with a Merc 80 that I bought using money from restoring and selling the Lonestar. Bottom line, just because it's old doesn't mean its a bad buy, just know what your buying first.
