Ok bought this boat a month ago and I now have it running alright. Took out on lake a few times and changed my lower unit oil and it was real black but no white or milky looking substances so I know there was no water. Changed oil and took off my prop because my boat wouldn't go any faster than 10 mph and I was told my hub was spun. I have a 1967 or 1971 merc 500 (50hp) It says 71 on registration but boat mech said it was a 1967. Anyways took off prop and a washer fell out with little splines on it after prop came off it was like kinda stuck on the prop. There was a nut (no pin in it and there is no spot for a sheer pin to go, it was also very very loose.) ok nut, washer with splines, prop, then the piece that fell out the prop (a washer with splines). Ok I put the washer back on splines sticking towards prop, then prop, then other washer splines in towards prop, then tighten the nut real good. So next time I am out on water it goes a little faster but not much and my motor got real real hot now I have no water comming out the tell tale hole (only smoke or steam) and I have a ton of water in my lower unit:eek:. I drained oil the second I got home and it came out greenish white. So my question is did I not put the prop and washers back on correctly and why all of a sudden did the water pump or impeller stop working? Would not putting the prop back on correctly make the impeller not work? Iam I need of help. I know if I didn't put prop wahers back on correct thats how all the water got in lower unit but would that also effect the impeller? Any advice or replies would help alot. Also the vent and fill screws have no gaskets or seal on them, they are just two little screws that look the same and I was told there should be a seal or a rubber piece around them so water dosn't enter lower unit. Thanks

First off, get a Merc manual for your Merc 500. Sounds like you have a seal or two gone in the LU. If you're lucky, changing the seals/o-rings on the drain/vent plugs will do it. Changing the prop should not affect your LU, probably coincidence. Drop the LU and check/replace the pump and impeller. Get water pump pumping and then have the LU pressure checked for water intrusion. A reseal cost me about $250 on the same engine about 3-4 years ago. May be higher or lower in your area.
