Hi Folks
I have a 72 100hp rude with a 3 button electric shift switch. Its working but acking a little rough.
mine has 5 terminals on it.

I find allot of referance on 3 wire units but having truble finding any thing on a 5 wire.

Can this be re wired to work on a 3 wire. Does anyone have a correct part number for a 5 wire.

Re: Electric shift switch 3 wire vs 5 wire

The 1972 switch with 5 wires will allow starting only in neutral. Part #279458
The 1971 switch with 3 wires can start in gear or neutral. Part #279090

Either one will work with the above considerations in mind. To use the '71 switch you would have to connect the two white wires together.

Both are listed as no longer available.

Keep in mind that there are also some look-alike switches for the old spring clutch shifts. Those won't work in your motor.

279091 is for the 40hp with spring clutches. It is the one that I mentioned that looks the same but is electrically different. Won't work on your 100hp.

Re: Electric shift switch 3 wire vs 5 wire

i have come up with what i think is a good solution for replacement
requires 3 easy to get parts
1. spdt center off switch on - off - on
qty 2 dpdt 12v relays
see sketch but may be hard to read
sequence when switch off both relays are off power to green and neutral switch is made

switch on to forward no power to anything and neutral safety is open

switch to reverse power to green and blue neutral safety is open

what do you guys think?

What do I think? I do not promote the idea of using a toggle switch because of the safety concerns, both toward people and property. However, if a person is determined to do it against my advice here is how to do it with just a simple DPDT toggle switch.

i agree about safety think i have answered them

mine includes neutral safety as well as center neutral forward up reverse down

also will go from either gear to neutral first

should not be attempted by someone without electrical knowledge

pretty sure this is whats built into the switch

either way have fun and be safe

Agreed that the DPST is crude, and confusing, but simple to wire up. Just for the record though, it is impossible for the motor to go from forward to reverse without passing through neutral, quick as it may be. Also, with the Evinrude push buttons, it is possible to push the reverse button while in forward, and vice-versa. In fact that was a selling point, and why they called it "Selectric". You can select whatever gear or neutral that you want.

Re: Electric shift switch 3 wire vs 5 wire

Great help, I understand both drawings.
Question,,,,How many amps do you think the Solenoids pull.
Im not sure which way I will go yet but I want to make sure I get a switch or relay that will handle it.

The resistance is 5-6 ohms. So, Ohm's Law says 14.5/5=2.9amps. Or thereabouts. It is an inductive load, which means get a better switch than you think it needs. Personally, I think that is why the pushbuttons don't last any longer than they do. Just my 2c.

Jack,

That is a very ingenious idea you came up with using those relays, and thanks for providing it.

Yes all, I too am a poor bastich that is now working on trying to replace that dang broken neutral switch with some sort of retrofit. This would be the second switch I've gone through since this boat was new (many, MANY years ago).

Looking closely at your hand written diagram I finally figured out what your circuit was doing. Is that Ladder Relay Logic? Anyways, I believe your circuit is a good one. I especially like how Neutral is in the center, thus providing a natural 'break before make' contact condition when moving between forward and reverse. Here's another diagram of it I just threw together (sloppily at that) - hopefully others can see just how it works with this diagram.

Here's a question that bugs me though - what would REALLY happen if cruising at 20 mph while in forward, then (accidentally) flipping the retrofit toggle switch into the reverse position? Truly what would happen? Catastrophic failure? Anybody ever heard of someone accidentally doing this to a retrofit toggle switch patch job like this on one of these old Johnson Hydro-Electric controlled engines?

Re: Electric shift switch 3 wire vs 5 wire

What would happen is it would go into reverse at 20mph. Pretty hard on the parts, but they might survive. And then again....they might not.

Reminds me of my new '63 Chevy that I had. Somebody told me that if you shifted it into reverse while going forward it wouldn't shift till it slowed down first. So I got all drunked up one night and tried it at 50mph. Took it to the Chevy shop the next day. P.S. A few more lessons and I stopped drinking.
