Gear Ratio ??

have a 1979 rude 140, (by the model #) went to replace the water inlet screen,purchased the part last week, and the new screen is around a 1/4 in. more narrow ,but the same Length and thickness, I called the shop I got it from and he looked in the book and said it is a 1974 gearcase on it,due to the smaller screen,and that instead of a 2.1 ratio, (1979)it has a 2.1.5 ratio.1974)
can I get some input on this info please.. is this info accurate?? and if accurate,how will the ratio affect rpm's and speed? will it gear it up or down??

A 1974 V4 gearcase won't bolt up to a 1979 midsection.

Is your trim unit between the stern brackets?

yes,the two rams and motor are bettween the stern bracketts..

model # of my rude is 140943R

the screen he give me was out of a pack or bulk, and he said this is the one for the 1979 <>140..

he said the smaller screen was for the 1974 140

the brand is pro marine the # is 1123 waterscreen omc.

give me an idea, I went to promarine and typed in the part #, comes up its for a V-6 not a V-4.. Thanks again..
