I'd rather not pull the engine...

If I don't have to.

I have the inside of my boat gutted back to the engine. I left in the section of stringer and engine mount that supports the motor. Is there a way to support the engine so that this can be removed and replace without pulling the engine?

I'll post pics later if I can get out to boat before dark

Not pulling the engine will be far more work than pulling it, and lead to a lower quality job because of lack of access to the stringers/mounts and space constraints. Besides, pulling the motor and drive will let you seal the transom openings if you want.

If you're putting in the large amount of work needed to rebuild your boat, you should do it right.

there's so much more room without the engine and associated wires, hoses, controls, etc. plus you can really get the bilge clean and painted too.

Doh! I knew that some smart guy(s) would chime in and tell me that if I want to do it right, that's the way to go. Seriously, thanks. It was the first corner that I wanted to cut since the bride told me Sunday night that she's a bit upset that "the list" is sliding so that I can work on the boat.

Here's some pics...

Notice the stain where a stringer used to be:

Penst8; Chances are your transom is in the same condition. You'll have to pull the engine to get to it from the inside fo replacement.
Just think how easy it is compaired to the guys that did this with twin V-8's.

Pull the engine. That will allow you to fix the other problem that you will find back there.

Have a great day,

Rob.

As far as I can tell the transom is fine. I'll know better when the debris is removed, but everything has passed the "hammer tap" test. The transom isn't one sold piece of wood, but seems to be 3 seperate pieces seperated by glass.

I can safely say that all of the rot started with the PO improperly mounting the gas tank cover and tank hold-downs by screwing them directly into the stringers with wood screws. The rot has been limited to the tank area and a few feet either direction.

Stringers were OK from capt seat forward even though I removed them. The pieces that I cut out behind the motor were also solid.

Hehe, the list. :) Good luck with your boat and the list. Both will always be a work in progress.
