Re: How many have taken Safe Boating Course?

I have taken the Coast Guard AUx class 3 times, first one back in 1972. Went back with my entire crew (Wife and two kids) when we got a bigger boat and everyone passed the class.

Have also taken the US Power class 2 times. Each class I learned something and got up to date on any rule changes. I bought my first boat back in 1967 and had been boating with my Dad long before that.

I think going to the class is a lot better than book learning, because you meet other boater and thing they had run into. Questions other ask you did not think of you will still get the answers to something that might help you in the future.

Important to practice what you have learned also. Man Overboard drill, I think is Very important. Just take a basket ball and have someone throw it overboard when they feel like it. Then yell man overboard and try to retrieve without loosing site of the ball or running over it. Very easy drill in a nice calm lake with no wind. But try it offshore with 8 foot seas and 3 foot of chop and 30 MPH of wind and you will fine it not so easy. First time we did it in rough water lost site of the ball for a short time and that can be deadly. also can not approch from up wind or up swell as wind and swells will push your right over your person. After your think you have it down then make the one who usually drive the boat the person to watch the ball and see if other in the crew can get the boat back to the person. Since the boat driver might be the one that fell over board.

Coast Guard AUX and the US Powers Squardons both now have short classes and longs classes. The long classes 13 weeks are much better than the short classes. I ask why are they doing these short classes and the answer was many just want the certificut to get a break on their insurance and will not sign up for the long classes.

I think the Coast Guard Aux does a better job of going over all the regulations and saftey gear.

US Power Squardons has a better dead reckoning navigation class in the long course.

All the classes I have taken were FREE but you had to buy the Training Manual at least one per family. US Power Squadrons also had to buy the basic Navigation tools, ( parallel rule, protractor and dividers) but good to have and know how to use.

I took one online (boatus.org) when I first got my boat. One thing nice about it was after I took the test, a certificate was printed and it gave me 10% off my insurance.

I believe in mandatory training and certification. Got my education in the Navy, taking more rules of the roads tests than I can count.

Re: How many have taken Safe Boating Course?

Since I was going on an extended cruise in a small boat, I took the Power Squadron course in NY back in '71. Lost the certificate. So, last year I took the PA online course and got my certificate--just in case I should want to ride a jetski. Besides, I figured that if I went to Jersey, and wanted to rent a ski, it would save me the 2 hour course

I also find that even though I don't need the certificate, when I show it the the local "Boat Police" on one weekend, they tend to leave me alone and roust other boaters on following weekends. I consider that it was worth the 15 bucks--even though I did not learn anything new, it did refresh memory of some things I had forgotten.

And I am a realist. Even though I dislike government meddling, the govt. always starts slowly; requiring the certificate for jet ski operators is just the start. I forsee a time when all boaters will be required to have a license and insurance will be mandatory.

Not like the old days in NY when you paid the 9 bucks registration fee for 3 years and NO STICKER was issued. --They trusted you to re-register every three years. But back then, It was considered a point of honor to know the rules of the road and operate responsibly.

I need to look at that actual class. I only took the internet test cause I needed the card to be legal. I might actually gain something from the instructed class.

I'm an old salt,,, lol,,, Been boating maybe 50yrs, learned a lot over the years, but still learning. I took the NY PWC course online from Boat US in 2002, then found it wasn't valid in Pa, so I took the online PWC course for Pa last year in 2006, It never hurts to keep abreast of new things, or rules pertaining to your state, and refresh everything you know, or might forget.

I grew up around boats, Dad always had a open bow I/O, usually a Glasstron. While in the Navy I was the gig (Captains boat) engineer for the captain...for 4 yrs. That was 73-77, And I have had a boat of one sort or another ever since, usually a 16 ft or better with an outboard, I am still learning about boats, that's one reason I am on this forum......I do believe that everyone should take a Boating course before being allowed on the water..........including me.
