I've been waiting for it to come on and it premiered toight. Its 40 kids dropped off in a ghost town and set up similiar to the Survivor series. It was real intersting and I'll be watching it every week.

We watched the premier. Really liked the idea of limited commercials. It put more content for the viewer to see. It is going to be interesting to see if these kids can organize and run the town. With the introduction of the gold star, it sure changed their attitudes on getting their jobs done.

No...Sounds like sanctioned child abuse to me.

I watched and they ask and allow the children to leave at will

There are plenty of adults in the background

I think the pre-press hype wanted to give it a bad rap

What?????? I thought it's a good idea, it teaches kids to do more thing for themselve. It encourages them to get up off their behind instead of being glued to the tv/video game and internet like me :D. Before the show, I thought it was going to be like a controlled Lord of The Flies type of thing. But then I thought, nahhh..not in this country. It's basically Survivor-kid version. That one weirdo kid on the red team really cracked me up though when he was talking about the out house "Like MLK said, I have a dream". :D. Too bad Jimmy from the green team decided to leave because I like him and his chubby, shaggy look.

Whatever. FTR, I don't watch any of the "reality" shows, incl "Survivor". If I wanted to watch a bunch of plotting, lying, conniving, back stabbing people interacting, I'd just attend my next family reunion.

But that may be just me.

I haven't seen it...heard about it tho'. I, as well, don't watch too many of the reality shows.
Kind of sounds like a real life working version of Scouts and Girl Guides...which would almost tie into that other post.
I doubt it is even remotely connected to or subject to child abuse issues. You probably can't swing a cat on set without hitting a guidance counsellor or a parent....or a child rights lawyer.

I'm tired of all the Reality TV shows. I've never watched any of them and never will. Whatever happened to the good shows like they show on TV Land like Get Smart, Wild Wild West, Bonanza, Andy Griffith and others? The only good things to watch these days are football and shows on Discovery, History and the other educational channels.

My daughter has a freind ( the one I consider the best of the bunch) that is a female version of the weirdo. She's a great kid, extremely smart and outgoing, but very quirky. I felt sorry for little Jimmy too. I just knew he was gonna stick around. What really suprised me and put hope out for the future is they choose the outhouses over the TV.

What was the choice there?...if they chose TV?....would they just have to 'improvise' or wing it in the woods or something?

No BigP, they had one outhouse to use between 40 kids. The choice was for more of them versus T.V.

Actually, some of the reality shows are really good.

Supernanny is good for me and the kids to watch together. I get some ideas and they see how stupid tantrums look.

Wifeswap shows how messed up some peoples familiy lives are, and helps them.

Beauty and the Geek helps the nerds get dates and the cuties to see nerds as "cool".

Biggest Loser helps people loose weight and motivates me to never look like that. I have been known to exercise while watching this show.

Survivor is OK, except I always wonder why the girls never have any hair on their legs or armpits after a month in the wilderness. Not exactly reality when you know you can be whisked away to a hospitial in minutes.

Most of the others are garbage.

I watched Kid Nation last night. It was too scripted for me. Too much like a game show for kids. I wasn't a fan. However, I think kids may enjoy watching it.

For those of you who like the show, you may want to find out what the fine print says in the contract that the parents had to sign to allow their children to participate. Check out:

This is problematic and worrisome as a parent or grandparent:

No Human Rights In "Kid Nation"
No liability for CBS in controversial "ghost town" reality series

AUGUST 23--Parents of minors starring in "Kid Nation," the controversial new CBS reality show, signed away their rights to sue the network and the show's producers if their child died, was severely injured, or contracted a sexually transmitted disease during the program's taping......

That is their concern.

The thread was started as posters' reactions to the show. Everyone has to define the 3 square feet of moral turf that they will stand on. Mine does not include a "reality" show in which the producers have to CYA with regards to STD's and pregnancies in groups with children as young as 8 years old.
