Overheat Warning Horn

I have a 1988 60 HP. Where is the overheat warning horn on this motor? How do I check that it works? I ask because the control box that was installed with this motor is from the 1970s and does not have a horn in it.

Thanks

Re: Overheat Warning Horn

Heat switches, installed in each cylinder head, are in series with a "HOT" warning horn in the remote control box, which you may or may not have. Should an irregularity develop in the cooling system and cause abnormal water jacket temperatures, the switches close the warning circuit. A switch may be checked by submerging it in hot oil Using a test light to check the contacts and a thermometer to check oil temp., the contacts should close at a temp of 211 F + or - 6 and open at 175 deg F plus or minus 7.

You can test your switch by grounding it out to the block, the horn should sound.

To remove switches for testing, pull back insulating sleeves and open knife terminal connections. Remove cylinder head covers and switches. On installation, clean gasket surfaces thoroughly. Apply gasket sealing compound lightly to both gasket surfaces. Also apply the same sealing compound to top surface of heat switch grommet and again after cover has been installed. Install cylinder head cover using a new gasket. Reconnect heat switch leads and slide insulating sleeves over connections.

Just to add to HighTrims good advice, if the remote control is a 71' or up, it will have a warning horn if equiped with an ignition swith.

Is the audible device integral with the ignition switch? I had this control box apart and dont recall anything electrical beyond the ignition switch. I believe this box is a mid-1970s unit.

Thanks.

Did you notice a tan wire hanging lose in there? That's the lead for the temp sender on the engine.

Remote controls that do nothing more than shift the gears and add throttle will not have a warning horn in them. The over heat warning system takes it power from the ignition switch. That's why I added the Ignition switch in my last post.

This control has the ignition on the control box itself, however, I dont recall seeing a loose wire in there. Im increasing disappointed with the work done by the boat store who installed this motor, so it would come as little surprise that they put this junk box in there that also lacks a horn.

If the warm up lever sets on top of the control box, then the box should have a warning horn. Could be the tan wire is nipped off at the wire harness. The horn is something should you NOT be with out. Maybe a little nudging at the dealership will solve the problem. When a boat is rigged, testing of the overheat horn is usually at the top of the list.

The throttle lever is on the side, near the bottom of the box. Can I add the horn to the box if the wire is there?

Yes, you can add the horn. Does the control have like a padded top?

Well....as I said, maybe a little nudging may help get the situation corrected and I certainly would inquire about it.
