In a previous thread i was having trouble with the flywheel banging the magneto plate on my 1954 7.5 fleetwin. I never took the brass ring off to dig deeper as i believed i was the first one in there to work on this thing, and that couldn't possibly be right. Low and behold, the armature plate was installed upside down, and you called it. The taper was facing down, and it should have been up. I still have a few issues with it as i have some uneven compression.. 72 one side, 90 on the other.. I believe a decarb will solve much, as i can see the carbon on the pistons by sight thru the plug hole..and i lost spark to 1 side.. so i will order a coil \ condensor kit tomorrow.. (right here at Iboats)
And.. You took the time to ship me an obsolete part i never would have been able to order seperately just for the shipping cost. Man.. WHat a resource this forum is.. And sincerely.. Thanks again.

I expect you retested the compression after getting such uneven results so I'm assuming you really do have a compression issue.

Your compression could be due to a bad head gasket or warped head. Or perhaps the lower crankcase seal needs to be replaced. That is the o-ring and cork washer on top of the drive shaft.

Personally, I'd do the decarb and check the lower crankcase seal. If you still have uneven compression I'd pop the head, sand it down a little on a lapping plate and reinstall with a new head gasket. Of course, if the head is too warped to repair you'll have to find a donor.

Well. Im assuming if i can see carbon on the pistons thru the plug hole, step 1 is De-carb. The compression is consistant every time i check it. I don't believe i will go so far with this particular motor as to sand the head, but you never know.. It's gonna be a long cold winter here in maine..SHe's pretty mint otherwise though. Shifts awesome..Man your making me panic.. lol I have it all back together now except for the carb bowl. Ill see if she runs first, then im sure ill be in panic mode once again..The plan is to put it on one of those small 100$ speedboats i see on the web. And to learn enough to know how to fix these old girls. I love a bargain.. I thought bad compression was rings.. I have much to learn

It could just be the rings. I am right in assuming you got 90 up top and 72 down below? Did you change the impeller? If so did you also check and change the o-ring and cork gasket I mentioned? It should be changed and might be adding to your compression problem. Lapping the head isn't a big deal.

Thanks, but I'll pass on the beers. There was a time in my life when I was on the verge of becoming a full-blown alcoholic. Don't want to go there anymore.
