Re: Reman engine running - noise?

I ran a 20 minute break-in for the cam tonight, it went fine.

I'm posting a description in my rapido engine thread if anyone's interested.

Erik, Ive been there. My dad was exactly like Buttanic. But....He did it often and had no problem busting down an engine again if it wasn't perfect. That Moly lube is pretty tough, I bet you will be fine.

I agree with buttanic in that you should find a good machinist and work with the engine you got. Even if you don't have the tools you can participate in the build and you KNOW what you have.

A trick on the timing,...Get it all buttoned up and keep the distributor loose. Turn the key to the on position. Hold the number one plug wire where you can hear it. Place the timing mark on what it should be ..ie...6 BTDC.... on the damper....whatever your application. Remember, you were at TDC or should have been. So this is just a little move of the engine to where you need your timing to be. Now twist the distributor until you hear the nuumber one plug fire. It will crackle ..or fire when you pass the rotor. Tighten the distributor down where it fires in the number one plug wire. That's it. Your timed in.

Good Luck

FWIW, The Mercruiser Owners manual from 1997 is very similiar to what was posted on the Volvo. Merc did it on one small page though, and the manual covers, 4, 6, and 8 cylinder models.

Nice posts, john. The only problem I can see, though, is most early 90's to now engines are roller cam equipped and the break-in would probably be a little different b/c the cam doesn't need to be broken in the same way.

A side note- new equipment break in is different than rebuilt engine break in. The goals you are trying to accomplish are not the same. So if I bought a new boat with a new outdrive and engine, the break-in would be different than if I was installing a rebuilt motor into something.

SuperNova,
My earlier post still applies "What does the guy warranteeing it say?" ;)

I posted the op manual info just to indicate it was very similiar as you would suspect since GM is providing the info to both. It is also very generic, and have seen the same recommendations for rebuilt engines. If no specific instructions or warnings came with the rebuilt engine, and the supplier has not, didn't, won't, no longer able to provide any, I would consider them "safe" and good recommendations to follow.

On the roller cams, in 1997 it was the first year that all SB Mercs went to roller cams. The 4.3's already had it. I don't know if the BB and 3.0L had them. The book is written to all, so the lowest common denominator would apply. ;) ie while a roller cam doesn't need that initial break-in, it probably doesn't hurt it.

As far as the slight deviation that Erik did, I am on the side that doesn't think it will be an issue. If it did, I think it will show up within the first 100 hrs. It will not be something that will only slightly degrade the life out past 500hrs and beyond. If damage was done, it will quickly lead to excessive lobe/lifter wear.
