Hi,
I am trying to positively identify an OMC Stringer that has come into my possession. It is mated to what I believe is a Ford 351W. I cannot find any references on the web for my model and serial numbers, found on a plate on the starboard side of outdrive. Model 981061 Ser W130836

Can anyone help with any info?

Thanks to all for time and effort,
Ken

Yes, but it isn't offering any information of value. What is the HP? Is it a 400/800 etc.?

Thanks
Ken

There are a couple of things you can do to narrow the model down. Start with the year of the boat it is attached to. The next is a picture of the Outdrive. Preferbly Starboard Side. With the Engine you have, you are looking at a drive capable of handing 190-225HP. Although a picture will speed up the ID process greatly, narrowing questions will work also, just take longer. For an example, the amount of screws holding down the pressure ring on the rubber boot will cut the number of models practically in half.

with that v8 in front of it....depending on the year....it could be an electric shift (early) or an 800 series (later)...400 series drives, i believe, were only used for 4 cyl. engines.....a picture will get you a thousand words!!

Hi Everyone,

There are 16 small stainless philips head screws holding the ring around the boot.

Also, while researching this, I talked to a guy that had me look for two wires on the port side of the "bell housing", I found them, so he said that he thought it was an electric shift.

I am trying to figure out how to use this stupid digital camera, I wish my wife and kids were not at the inlaws for a vaca. right now or I would already have pix up. Working on it.

Thank you so much for your help,
Ken

The Seloc 64-86 OMC manual is pretty good and has an ID section with gear ratios and refill capacities.

Hello,

I think I got this camera working. Photos are grainy, as this is a cheap old JamCam.

OK something is wrong. How do I include photos?

The sterndrive is in a 1976 Winner 24' Flybridge Sport Fisherman.

Thanx

Re: OMC Stringer Outdrive Identification

Could there be any numbers or identification on the "bell housing" part, that I could be missing? If so, where would they be located?

Thanks again,
Ken

The Style of the Exhaust Casing, Rudder, Trunion Cap are consistent with the year boat. It is possible that it is either 1976 or 1977, Low Profile Electric Shift, Mechanical Steering Outdrive. A Parts catalogue for either year will likely work. The OEM Parts Catalogue for 1976 is 981295, 1977 is 981357. Best guess on HP is 235HP since you have a Ford 351. Parts Manuals can be found on Ebay where I got all mine or Ken Cook for re-Prints. If you find them on Ebay, although used they will likely be cheaper. Given the shape of the drive, you will need to refurbish outside and inside. I recommend an Original OEM Service Manual which can also be found at the same place as the Parts Catalogue. Service Manual for 1976 is 981313 and 1977 is 981603. A good place to start on Ebay but not the only place to find it on Ebay is at the following link:

Service Manual

Good Luck and Welcome TO Iboats!

Thank you, Lyndy, for your help.

Do you know what they call this model? Is that the 400/800 or is it called something else?

Thanks

"Electric Shift", but many people incorrectly refer to it as an "800 series" when it's behind a V8

So my drive (behind a 120hp) is an electric shift so it isn't a 400 it is an "Electric Shift". Just want to order up a manual and I want to be sure I am ordering the correct one. I am not 100 % certain but I am fairly sure it is a 1978.

Does not really have a name. Personally I call it OMC Stringer. Since the 400 and 800 have their own Model Name, I do not refer to them as Stringers. For me it cut down on the confusion. For your reference, the 400 and 800 Series did not start appearing until 1978.

400 and 800 Series look differently then earlier OMC Drives. If it is an Electric Shift the newest it is likely to be is a 1977. If you want, post another thread with several pictures and some of us here may be able to help you date it.
