1969 evinrude 55 hp selectreshift

ok to start with this site is the greatest ya'll have already helped me a bunch...thanks, any way heres my next question on my 1969 evinrude 55 hp it has the electric shift ok when i first start the engine (cold start) with nuetral button pushed down it's in forward gear.ok then ill run it around the lake for a wile then shut it down restart the motor in nuetral then it's in the nuetral mode any one have any idea's whats the problem....thanks for any help

when was the last time you changed the lower unit oil? it takes type "C" also called premium blend i think

the lower gear oil was changed id say a couple months ago

the motor has to produce 12 volts, in order for the shift solenoids, to shift. when first starting, right after starting, try shifting to forward and back to neutral.

Your lower unit is normaly in forward gear.When you crank and start it,there is a circuit that provides 12 volts to put it in neutral.It works on the impulse of the engine.That is the action of the pistons going up and down.

Look on the starbord side of the engine,forward part of the crankcase halves, I believe the middle cylinder.You'll see a 'cap' about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

Peel it off.It is actually a diaphram.It maybe cracked,or the contact points maybe corroded.
