O.K. one more question! resealing cork?

Guys, I've read a few posts that modern fuel will eat the shellac off of cork floats. I've got a 1953 johnson 10 hp that I really need to reseal the cork float on.--can't find a plastic replacement. I also just got a "tall boy" pressure tank that has a big cork float to operate the fuel gauge that needs resealing. I want to do it right---what should I use to reseal those corks and where could I get the stuff?
Thanks,
JBJ

My fuzzy memory tells me that years back they used to use clear nail polish.

The float is still available from your OMC/BRP dealer. Some people use model dope. I just re-varnish them. Actually I use polyurethane, which also happens to be alcohol resistant. I dip them once and shake off the excess and when they are dry I do it again. Just make sure it is a nice even coat with no big gobs.

I was worried that gasoline would eat the varnish off.
Thanks. By the way, my son and I just took my 7.5 I was working on to the lake today(thanks to your help), it runs like brand new and leaks no water into the lower unit. I'm extra pleased with it now and feel like it's as reliable as a new motor(I put new coils and condensors, too) My son is 5 and I let him run it--may have myself a future old johnson/evinrude nut!
good fishing,
JBJ:)
