Anybody, know the starting procedure for 1979 85hp V4?

Also, the choke has been replaced with a manual choke. If that matters

Re: starting procedure

1. Pump up fuel line primer bulb until hard.

2. Engage manual choke.

3. Turn key to start and crank until engine fires.

4. Disengage choke-recrank, engine should start.

5. Choke may have to be re-engaged breifly to keep engine running.

Re: starting procedure

I have a cranky 79 85hp... How long should each crank cycle last? I am told by the previous owner that the first start is the hardest... However, I never asked the question of how long should it take to start under normal mornning crankiness... LOL

Re: starting procedure

The procedure above is fine for a manual choke engine with one exception. Use the fast idle lever for cold starts or if you feel the engine is flooded. If you have to crank more than 10 seconds to start an engine something is wrong. Get it tuned up. If your boat as a side-mount control pull the lever out and then move it forward. This action disconnects the shift function so the engine can be fast idled. When you get ready to go, pull the throttle back to neutral, the shift linkage reengages and away you do.
