I think he was talking about the shift housing on the outdrive end of the cable, not the shift converter on the transom end. Thats how I read it anyway.

yes the shift housing it is any idea how much it was called one place they told me $900

That seems a little steep to me, but maybe. Be alot cheaper if you do it. You need a manual though, there is a certain procedure to follow when you install the new cable in that housing. Housing itself is around $100 if you can find one. I found a used cable on ebay with the housing allready attached to it.

Yeah they wanted 900 just for the part. Now what is the special tool for the cables? Found just the housing but would have to swap out the cables

Do you have a manual? It shows how to do it in there. After the housing is off the lower, pop the 4 screws off the bottom of the housing, this exposes the pullys that the cables are attached to. On the side of the housing there is a round plug looking retainer with a groove cut in it, take a screwdriver and pry that off. Inderneath that retainer there is a shaft that runs through the housing one of the pullys, and the shift gear rides on that shaft. There is a special tool, according to the manual, that screws on there to pull the shaft and the bearing out. You may be able to make something that works, I dont know.
