gas from the carb.

My 13 yr. old son and I are outboard novices, but learning as we go. We have a 1985 Evinrude 25 hp. electric start that has a 1979 powerhead. Yesterday I redid the carburetor with a carb kit, although I'm happy with the way the engine is running, my concern is; After running the engine in a tank, when the engine is tilted up (to remove the barrel) quite a bit of fuel runs out of the carb. This doesn't seem right too me. I'm concerned (when the motor is tilted on the boat) if gas runs out of the carb and pools... fumes would build under the cover and with the electric start, the starter motor could ignite the fumes. Is it at all normal for gas to run out of the carb throat like that? It did the same thing before I did any work on it.

you wil get some running out but it shoudnt be excessive. recheck your float level could be a little high

Or you could pull the fuel line with the engine running and let the carb run dry for storage...

all I do Is un-plug the gas line and run the motor out of gas, its working for me.

OK. As long as you guys don't think there is something physically wrong with the carb. I can live with it.

you should not have "quite a bit" of fuel run out. How did you set your floats?

If its truly "quite a bit" when running in a barrel how much is it going to be when you are on the water? Enough to flood the motor? I'd revisit the float. Check for a sticking float needle or incorrectly set float. Did the float needle in the kit come with a spring and did you use it?

I set the float so that it sat level which required a very slight bend in the arm. Yes, the kit came with a new float needle and spring and seat. I used them all.

Im not 100 percent on this, since i have never rebuilt the carbs on your motor, and the experts will be able to chime in with the correct procedure, but Im pretty sure that you should turn the carb body upside down so the weight of the float closes the needle and that the float should be parallel to the gasket surface.

I adjusted the arm so the float was level with the gasket.

If the float is parallel with the gasket surface and the needle and seat are in good shape (Sealing), then there is no need to worry. How much would you say is running out of the carb throat? Spoonful, Ounce, Etc? I would still pull the fuel line, let it run until it starts to stall and shut her off. That will eliminate the problem...

Re: gas from the carb.

Any chance that it's leaking from the float bowl gasket? or is it coming from the mouth of the carb?

No. It's not leaking from the gasket. It's coming right out of the mouth. Right where the choke plate is.
