I have a 1978 merc. 900 inline 6.

There is a box on the engine support cover that has several wires going to it on each side, and when it warms up, some black sticky goop keeps dripping out of it. its almost empty now, and is all over in the bottom of the engine cowling.

What is that box, and what can i do to stop that from happening, and do i need to replace it now?

Thanks,
nate.

That would be your switch box and it's headed south some times the can be re-potted with epoxy but usually not start looking for a replacement

yikes, just started looking at the replacement price for this engine. They are looking in the $350-$400 range!! that seems crazy. for the same size motor, with a later serial number they are only $135. whats up with that? and would the other one work?

Thanks for any help.

Does anyone know what type of epoxy is in the switch box on this model?
PN# 114-2986 from cdi, or #332-2986 from mercury. I'm thinking it would be worth peeling the cover back, filling it, and resealing the cover just to try it. The switchbox is still working right now, but i don't want all the junk to drip out of it, and ruin it.

Thanks.

Seems kinda dumb to spend $350 on a motor that will never be worth more than $350. ;)

If your switchbox is working, and the potting is running out, you have another problem.

Yer engine is overheating big time.

that would be amazing if it were overheating, cause its been sitting beside my house not running. haha. i start it every other weekend, and let it run for about 2-3 mins, it doesn't get very hot.

i'm thinking its just really old, it has been in there since 1978. even without the motor having been run for about a week, the epoxy is still dripping out, and soft to the touch.

Nate, If that motor has a distributor, it will have a pretty common switchbox. You can buy them aftermarket(new), off e-Bay or at a junk yard for boats. Punch up the part number onto a google search, and get the lowest price.
