How Much Water Coming Out And Where?

I just bought a 1956 15 HP (15016) Evinrude, it looks in great shape, but I do not want to kill it by being stupid. I put in a new impeller, and made sure the water tube is in the grommet on the leg, changed the gear oil and checked over the carb etc. It seems to run hot when I have it running in a barrel. The water pickup is clear, as is the pump tube. I put air through the grommet in the leg, and it comes out of the port on the back. I was wondering how much water should be coming out, and where. Can the head be taken off without pulling the powerhead to check the water passages? It looks like it will clear, but the bottom 2 bolts look hard to get at. Thanks, this is a great forum. Rick

Pretty sure water should come gushing out from the large hole on the back of the exhaust leg. The hole is about 1" in diameter, and has a couple smaller holes drilled in it.The impeller is sitting on top of the lower unit, so it is where the lower unit mounts to the exhaust leg. FR or WBeaton are the men you want to talk to about the older motors

Correct, the water blows out the hole in the back.

Don't be taking the head off unless you are pretty sure that is the problem...which I'm not so sure, because it is not plugged up as evidenced by the fact that you can blow through it.

Did you have it deep enough in the water when you were running it? The water pump must be submerged, as it is not self-priming.

Re: How Much Water Coming Out And Where?

That's high praise, but there are lots of people on here that know everything there is to know about these old motors.

Can you elaborate a little more about what's happening, rjezuit? How much water do you have coming out? Like Hightrim says it should gush out the hole in the exhaust tower. It sounds like the passages are clear for the most part. How hot is hot? When running, you should be able to hold your finger on the head for a few seconds without getting burned. Also if the water in the barrel is warm it will run a little hotter too. Here is a video of a 1956 Evinrude 7.5 hp. You can see where the water comes out (above the waterline) and roughly what it should look like. Keep in mind the motor in the video has blown a welsh plug in the head and is blasting water under the cowl. Also its a little high out of the water.

You can remove the head without removing the powerhead. You will have to remove the lower cowl at the rear.

That's why I posted the disclaimer...

"Keep in mind the motor in the video has blown a welsh plug in the head and is blasting water under the cowl. Also its a little high out of the water."

Its just to give a rough idea what it should look like.

See you at the Pitz, Steve.

Re: How Much Water Coming Out And Where?

That's more water than I had coming out. It is coming out but not a stream, more of a spit, but consistently. I think it may be the not deep enough in the water thing, I will check tonight. The head and water manifold (? )is pretty hot after a few minutes running. Hot enough that the light rain I was doing this in was sizzling off.I will try it deeper tonight, and if that doesn't work I will pull the LU and spin the driveshaft with drill to see how much I get out. How deep is deep enough in the water? Covering the intake plate/screen? Up to the cavitation plate? Up to the "bulge where the pump is housed? Thanks, Rick

If it's sizzling I think it's too hot... Check the impeller AND housing... On my old 18 (similar engine) the impeller was in good shape but I replaced the housing and it worked much better as grooves wear in it... on the same 18 when I took the LU off and out it in a bucket of water and spun it on a driil (@330 rpm) the water shot about 8-10" out of the tube upwards... Make sure the pump housing is under water when testing... good luck...

That's way too hot. Try it deeper and then post back. The water pump has to be underwater. If you replaced the impeller then you know where it is in relation to the lower unit. I like a minimum of 4" over top of it.

I tried the motor 4" deeper in the water and it worked great. It pumps alot of water and I can hold my hand on the head after it is running for 15 min. Thanks, for all the help. Rick

I took the boat/motor out yesterday, it's replacing a 1968 Sears 7.5 (Scott McCullough). Boy what a difference. Ran like it was brand new. Thanks for all the help. Rick

I know this is a little old but I'm just wondering if it's okay for the exhaust to under the water? I have a 1963 evinrude 5.5 that it sits so low on the back of my boat the exhaust is in the water.
