Im a little confused on that to get. I will be in the cheaper range but my question is what type of stuff to get. Reel Size and rod size? I have seen a penn silverado 8000 and about a 7ft "big ***" rod at walmart $54. Is that just overkill? It seemed that say to me. I want something to fish from a boat, possibly trolling, in the sound and up to 7 miles out in the ocean. Also have considered geting Captiva CV6000 and a Cheap $16 pole. Clue me in on what I should be looking for and if you want to offer suggestions please to. About $80 would be my max but would not mind spending less.

I have always prefered one piece rods if you have the room and you can't believe the quality equipment you can pick up at yard sales. Forget Walley World, the cheap stuff you can get there probably won't last a season.

Re: Buying Cheap Spinning Combo what to get?

until i win the lotto im limited to walmart stuff. it isnt so bad, it requires a good bit of upkeep, the stuff will only be good for a season if you use it in salt and dont periodically re-lube em. they will go downhill FAST actually. i cant afford the good stuff so the walmart stuff with upkeep and some decent line keeps me going. the last 2 wallymart rigs have been doing great actually. gotta ditch the line though. i left the origional stuff on 1 pole since it casted so well. its less than a year old and now i can easily break the line while i am tying knots while my old trilene is tough as ever.

It really depends what you are fishing for.
The silverado 8000 is more of a surf reel, I agree that spending a bit on your gear is a good investment but the penn reels at kmart or walmart are good enough. If you want an all round boat setup for inshore/offshore I would get the silverado 5000 or the captiva CV6000 with a 6-7ft silstar(would be my 1st choice) 6-10kg rod or a penn powerstick 6-10kg, spooled up with 10-15lbs braid with 20lbs mono leader, lighter or heavier depending what you fish for most.

I've picked up a few nice rods and reels at pawn shops for a good price.

Maybe keep an eye out for a Fishing flea market in your area. You can get trolling rods and spinning outfits for $80!

Re: Buying Cheap Spinning Combo what to get?

Not to hijack this thread but, I'm going the other way. I have a variety of cheap stuff up to some pretty good stuff that I want to streamline. I'm thinking of 4 poles for my boat 2 conventional and 2 spin. I'm leaning towards Lamiglas inshore IC76 casting and IC76mhs spinning for the poles. Avet MXJ6.3 for the conventional reels. But I'm having a tough time finding a good set of reels. Any opinions.

I have 2 450's and a 550 graphite which are ok. Just looking to upgrade them. It seems you gotta go from $100 to about $350 till you reach the next level. I've looked at the Van Staal, and the Stella by shimano, but I don't want to pay 6-800for reels.

I only use a penn at the coast."set the drag and wet your finger before you cast"

Used to catch a lot of bluefish in Port Canaveral with a Zebco 202 rig. Had to change the line once day though. :D

Re: Buying Cheap Spinning Combo what to get?

On the boat I prefer Casting reals but can also use spinning. If you buy quality gear it will last you a lifetime. In Saltwater allways spray the reel and pole down same time you wash the boat. The more fresh water you spray on it the better.

I been fishing since the 1950 and still have every rod and real I ever bought. My first Spinning real a 300 mitchel still works but I do not use it much anymore, too light for saltwater.

Rod and reel need to match what your fishing for. For Salmon, Halibut and near shore rock fish I like a 8 to 9 foot rod in the 15 - 30 lb line rating. If trolling or mooching you need a light tip but need some back bone onced hook up that why I like 15 to 30 or 15 to 40. I have one 9 foot rod from walmart that is 15 to 50 and it was cheap. I use mostly level wind casting reels. I have many Abu Garcia 6500 C3 reels and they are bullet proof.

For deep rock fish your need a shorter heaver rod, still I like 7 foot in the 20 to 40 line weight with a penn GT2 320 reel.

Wash all the gear with fresh water as soon as you get the boat out and store it where the sun will not hit the pole and it will last your lifetime.
