Hi - I just picked up a 1976 Evinrude 70 hp on a 16 ft Thundercraft. My last boat had a 1963 40 hp Big Twin and there was an overheat light on the boat dash. My new boat has no such light.

Is there any kind of overheat alarm buzzer built in to the 1976 motors? If not, what happens if the water pump fails....I'm assuming there must be some safeguard built in somewhere (I hope!)

thanks
marc.

There should be an overheat horn in the remote control. To see if it works, look for a tan wire coming out of the cylinder head, with an insulating sleeve over the wire. Slide the sleeve back to expose the terminals underneath. Turn on the key and ground the tan wire to the head. Horn should blow.

Horn or light, neither is worth beans as a safeguard. At least the horn will get your attention. The only worthwhile safeguard is preventative maintainance....replace the water pump impeller periodically whether it needs it or not. If a water pump suddenly quits at high speed, once the horn blows it is already too hot and too late and too cooked. A false sense of security

Hi, my 1979 or '81 Johnson 115 HP outboard has a buzzer in the remote control unit. Yours probably does too, but I don't know.
