Just wondering if a shear pin was a shear pin. As long as it is the right size, is the shear pin from the hardware store the same as the "Johnson factory" shear pin?

No. Material and a whole lot of other mechanical factors needed that relate to its design purpose.

jwilkey, just exactly what motor/shear pin are you talking about? Of course you can make your own if you have the right material. Give us a model number.

the closest marina is 30 miles away and they want $12 for two pins! It is the pin that goes behind the prop that breaks when you hit something. I tried a roll pin, but that wouldnt fit right.

That doesn't tell me the model or horsepower or anything. I have a shear pin chart with sizes and materials if I have any idea what I am looking for.

My personal preference is brass. Ive hit alot of rocks and submurged stumps river fishing in Canada. The brass is softer than stainless and does less damage to the propeller blades. If you boat in a place where you wont hit anything, stainless may be the best bet, Brass over a long period will bend just from the constant shifting from forward to reverse but i usually check the lower end a few times during the year checking for fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft having to remove the propeller anyway and checking the pin as well. Dont use a roll pin or drill rod they are too hard and may cause internal damage to the lower unit gears or possibly the power head. Regular steel will rust and aluminum is too soft. Brass or stainless are about the only 2 common metals to use." a metallurgest might differ". I make my own pins its alot cheaper and i carry a few of them along with a spare nut and the tools to change one out . dont use a roll pin. F-R will set you in the right direction if you give him the info he needs.

307949 is 3/16" X 1 3/8" Stainless Steel. You can get a 12 inch piece of 3/16" #304 SS from speedymetals.com for 72 cents + postage. Got a hacksaw? Heck, buy two feet and supply the whole town.

72cents and 12 dollar shipping would get you on the water. Beats 12 dollars for the part and the gass going to get the part were you mentioned. Take it as a lesson learned :D just my 2 cents. You might find better deals out there, I might have some helpful links under my links on my web site

I'm surprised they don't have a big fat handleing charge. It costs the company way more to make the sale than they charge for the little piece of metal.

If the cost is that big a deal, try going to your local hardware store or autoparts store and see if they can order you a piece of SS in the right size?
NAPA Auto Parts here stocks a good assortment of both shear pins and key stock, I've been able to get both on several occasions.
You may even try another dealer, even another brand dealer may stock those just to have on hand for repairs.
I got my last ones from a local Yamaha dealer here that stocks parts for just about eveything. They were well under a dollar each and they were OEM packaged. I bought a dozen or so, along with matching cotter pins for like $12 and change. I think they were a Mercury dealer at one point too, but they keep a pretty good selection of all the popular brands since they do service all makes.

i think the insurance, of knowing i have the correct equipment, is worth $12. also knowing i'm not going to have to pull a prop in the water, during a storm.
