Re: trim problems

It would also be a good idea to check the control switch using a volt/ohm meter. I had a similar problem a few years back relays were rusted wiring looked shot replaced them only to find I needed a switch instead

Re: trim problems

are you talking about the switch that you push to move the motor up and down because neither the front or the back swithches will work:confused:

Yes An ohm meter placed on the contacts of the switch when it is pushed it should read O which means its working. I or OL means bad switch. I'm using a digital meter If it's an old needle style the needle will move all the way to the right. which means its good no movement bad. You can also check for 12volts @ the relays while flipping the switch

Re: trim problems

before that check the resevoir level, you are low on fluid, and getting lower. Top it up as needed, then cycle it a few times, then re fill again. It is self bleeding. Next check the manual release valve, ensuring it is closed and tight. Next determine if the electric motor is running at all. Let us know what you find.

Re: trim problems

Had a similar issue with a 1975 75hp with the original OMC TNT.

If the electrics are out, it could obviously be the switch/relays/wiring/etc.. Make sure this stuff all checks out OK.

Mine checked out ok, but still had issues that you describe.

I took the electric motor apart and found that it was fitted with a small "points type" thermal overload switch in the top brush housing, and that these contact points were corroded and the bimetal was a little bent.

Cleaned the contacts and re-bent the bimetal, and voilla.. problem solved.

Make sure you clean and lube everything well before reassembly.
And change/fill the hydraulic fluid before taking her out (mine had a little water in there)

Good luck, and post how things turn out for you.

Re: trim problems

sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you people. i have been really busy with it being deer season and all. lol. but i finally got around to working on my boat. i replaced the relay switches and it still didnt work. i noticed smoke coming off my battery and had it tested and it was bad. so i put a new battery in it and put the old switches back in it and it still didnt work. i put the new ones back in it and it worked fine. :D so it was a combination of the switches and the bad battery. thanks for the help anytime something goes wrong with my boat the people of this site always help me fix my problem and i really appreciate it. thanks for the help and once again sorry it took so long to get back on here. ;)
