I been trying to fix my motor for some time now. It's a 87 gm merc. The motor overheated, pulled the plugs, water on one side, compression 140 90 140, and water was in the oil also. So, I got new plugs, man/risers, gaskets, oil, and had the heads done. I just put it back together and she does not turn on. The engie sounds like it's going to turn on then it sort of grinds, This happens while trying to start. Its sort of a low sounding grind. It sounds how it use to start but it gets stuck on that grind. Could this be the Valves? I am lost here. Please somebody tell me what to do. Is the block cracked???? Please Help!!!!!:

Also I just got off the phone with the Mechanic and he told me that the ring grear on the flywheel, probaly went. Does this sound right?

Re: Please Help

pull the starter to verify a bad ring gear first, if you use the hi-torque starter
and tried to start the engine with water in it you destroyed the starter.

Are you saying the motor Turns Over on the starter,.... But doesn't Start,..??...
Does the motor continue to turn over when you hear this Grinding noise,..??...
Does the motor make 1 complete revolution before the Noise,..?... Or does it Grind All the time you're turning it over,..??...
Did the motor turn over freely when the plugs are out, or when the heads were off,..??....
I just put it back together and she does not turn on.

Did you adjust the Valves,..?? Set the Timing,..??...

It sound like it..

Does the motor continue to turn over when you hear this Grinding noise,..??...

I dont think so but not sure

Does the motor make 1 complete revolution before the Noise,..?... Or does it Grind All the time you're turning it over,..??...

Yes, I think that the engine does indeed make 1 complete revolution and then grind. The grind sounds like a siren

Did the motor turn over freely when the plugs are out, or when the heads were off,..??....

Yes, it did. I turned it with a wrench.

Did you adjust the Valves,..?? Set the Timing,..??...

I did adjust the valves. I turned the engine, felt for play, tightend. I repeated this till all where free of play then 1\4 turn.

Set the Timing,..??...

I don't know what the timing is??

thank you

Re: Please Help

Does the engine have to be pulled if it is the ring gear?

Re: Please Help

So, does the engine have to be pulled???? If not, can I do this myself? Thank you so much. I would have never been able to make it this far without the help of you guys and this wonderful web page. Hopefully I can get in some fishing before the season is over.

Re: Please Help

I just got off the phone with another mechanic. He told me that my timing is off and the way that I adjusted the lifters is wrong. I sort of just shoved the distributoor back into place. Could this be the reason why the engine doesn't start and makes that grinding /siren noise.

Re: Please Help

describe exactly how you installed the dist.
someone correct me if i`m wrong but the V6 is 3/4 from "0" lash. there is no torque value .
after reading the previous posts i think you should get the proper manual for you application and do some serious reading before you cause $$$$$$ damage.
you pulled the heads and don`t know how to set the valves, pulled the dist, out and dont know what timing is or how to set it. if you missed the oil pump drive you`ll toast the motor in short order.
pull the plugs and try to turn the motor by hand again,if it turns have the starter checked out.if it dosent you have something incorrectly installed someplace.ring gear requires motor removal and ring changed or replaced with another flywheel.

Re: Please Help

All I did was push the dist. utill it sat right, then I tightened it. Could the noise becoming from here if I installed this incorrectly?

my thoughts exactly.... nice to see this guy doing some DIY stuff, but could lunch some pistons or destroy some expensive stuff with no training, guidance or experience

Re: Please Help

You asked what timing was before, that kind of said it all. You need to read up on timing it is VERY important. Generally, the distributor is connected to the cam shaft by a gear, the cam shaft is connected to the crank shaft by a timing chain or belt, these things are all connected in a very specific way so that the valves open and close at the right time and the distributor fires at the right time and the pistons are in the right place when all this happens, that's why they call it TIMING. If any of these are out of wack then you will have big trouble.
