I have decided not to try and put my merc300 back in service but to get a newer more dependable outboard 25 to 40 hp. What should I look for in a used engine? i dont mine paying 12 to 15 hundred if its still got alot of service left in it. I dont mind it being a 2 stroke either. thanks

Re: Engine selection

i just both a 93 johnson 40 hp for $500. low hours, fresh water, super motor, i did disable the oil mixing, so i could premix. there are quite a few mice motors in that catagory, on ebay right now, close enough for you to see and pickup.

IMO, you will not beat a used 90's vintage Johnson/Evinrude in that catagory for reliability and ease of service...
