good day all,

When I am putting my boat in the water, and give it a little power and in reverse , the motor will raise up and come almost out of the water?

Does anyone know what would cause this?

Thanks in advance,

Depending on the year and size of the motor, there should be a small lever that says lock and tilt on it, it should be on the front below the motor cover. It needs to be in the lock position. Check all the stuff that contects to it, sometimes it gets rusty and stuck in place.

Year, size and brand would help a lot.

On some outboards there is a linkage from the shifting linkage that locks the engine when in reverse. You don't want it locked when in FWD because you want it to raise if you hit a rock or log.

Check your shifting linkage for the reverse tilt-lock.

Re: Motor Raises out of the water in reverse?

To expound a bit on the other answers, some OB's (like my 96 48SPL) has no automatic lockdown for reverse. It does have a manual tilt lock, which is really designed for towing the boat with the motor in the raised position. You do not want the motor locked down when running in forward as if you were to hit an underwater obstruction, the motor raising and riding over it might save your lower unit. I have gotten used to use very low rev's for reverse and not reving so high as to cause the motor to come up out of the water. I mean let's face it, how far and long do we really go in reverse? Just take it slow and easy. Hope this helps.

When the motor is locked down it will still release and tilt up when it strikes an object under water.

Does it? Not on my 93 Evinrude 50 anyway! Non power trim. The hydraulic cyinder when in the lock postion is solid. Even in unlock the motor can be manually raised but it takes some strength! Should it hit an underwater obstical it would not rise freely enough to prevent damage.
