So I took the engine out and am about to put the new one in... I have disconnected al the electric and cannot use the power trim to put the OD back down what can I harm if iremove it while it is up? Or will it come out the same just be a bit harder

type of drive?
type of motor?
Most drives using a shaft need to have the drive removed first before removing a motor. then the engine is installed and aligned.you can`t just slide the engine back in.

pre alpha mercruiser... I need to know if i remove the outdrive while the rim is up will hurt anything

unbolt the rams at the rear anchor point and lower the drive, shift into fwd gear, remove the 6 nuts and pull off.

Every outdrive Merc used before 1985 is a pre-alpha drive. Get used to putting actual year or model numbers on your posts. it will help in getting the proper answers.
Assuming this is a One drive or newer, put the shifter in forward, remove the trim/tilt ram pin from the back of the outdrive and let the drive down. Then remove the 6 bolts.
Don't forget to check and adjust your engine alignment when you get the engine back in.

Am I missing something, or won't you have to unhook the trim cylinders to get the drive off anyway?
