Avoid starting fluid in a 2 stroke, Brian. No lube is an invitation to a blown up engine. Use premix (24:1).

Your engine is not getting fuel. Probably a failed carb cleaning.

Neither a fuel pump or pressure tank system has a dang thing to do with getting a motor started. With either system, you fill the carburetor's float bowl by operating a primer pump, whether it be a squeeze bulb or the primer pump in a pressure tank. Up to now, I am assuming the primer pump is actually working and pumping gas into the carburetor. With the carb full, it should start and run awhile till the fuel in the carb is all consumed, even if you had no tank connected at all. Taking it one step further, if it starts and runs till the bowl runs out of fuel, then starts to die, you should be able to keep it going with the primer pump. If you can do that, then is the time to look for a tank problem, not holding air or the motor not pushing air into the tank.

Is your high speed jet at 1.5 turns too? Should be 1 turn. 1.5 turns on the high might flood it at start up, but I don't think that's your problem. You should revisit the carb. Did you remove the welsh plug from above the low speed needle? There are holes in there that need to be cleaned out.

Also, there is no need to replace the tank. The pressure tank system works fine.

Sounds like it's primed to run...set the high speed, bottom, needle at 3/4 to 1 turn out from lightly seated; the top needle at 1 and 1/4 turn out from seated. When I start my 58 18 hp or my 56 15 hp I crank the throttle over to Fast, pull the choke out, squeeze the bulb till I know the carb is full and it only takes 3-4 pulls for it to pop over. Then push the choke in and another pull has it going...let it warm up for a few seconds and then throttle down to Start and/or Slow. They need clean carbs though. Either fuel systems works good...just depends on which you prefer. I converted both of mine to fuel pumps so I could use the existing modern tanks/lines I had lying around the shop. The most fun part of these old J's is replacing seals in the lower end and changing the shift connector...definitely learning experiences. Great motors though, lots of grunt and very reliable.

Re: 1955 15hp johnyrude update

Thanks all for info, I think my problem is in my presure tank, cuz when I was pushing on primer pump it got real hard like it did not want to work, dont think carb is at fault tore it down cleaned out and blew everything, jet needle valve and double checked all other passage ways to make sure air passed through,I think all I saw was fuel in glass bowl on bottom of carb and was not able to keep pushing fuel in line to fill up in float bowl, gonna convert to fuel pump to upgrade fuel system, hope that duz the trick so she will run great for me next year Brian

sticl small nail or the like in the gas side of the fuel connector on the tank, then pump the button, if gas comes out it is fine. use it. let the tank sit in the sun for a little while, the slowly open the cap, if it hisses, it is holding pressure, and should work
