I have a 1984 Johnson VRO (with VRO disconected, thanks to previous owner). After about 30 minutes of WOT, 2 cyl conk out, bringing RPMs down to about 2500 - 2800. Runs this way for 30 - 45 minutes, then all four cyls kick in back up to 4500 rpms. then will cycle from 2 to 4 cyl off and on. recent work - Have replaced both power paks; tilt & trim relays; impeller; new tach; horn; cup & plate; new battery; new fuel filter.

Problem started on 9-8-07; ran about 45 min, then would not run over 2800 rpm WOT; ran back to dock on 2 cyl;

compression good; no fire in right bank; replaced both power paks (to be on safe side); fuel filter; all cyl firing, ran in tank for almost 2 hours, no problem.

Took it out 9-22-07; ran about 30 - 40 min, then would not run over 2500 -2800 rpm; ran back to dock on 2 cyl; when cut motor off, tilt relay was stuck going down;

replaced both relay on tilt & trim; tighten all connections.

Took it Wed, 9-26-07 for trial run after repairs; ran like a scalded dog for over an hour, no problems.

took it out Sat, 9-29-07, ran fine to islands about 30 minute run; wade fished for 2 -3 hours; ran around island for 30 minutes; wade fished for another hour; started home, after about 15 minutes, 2 cyl went out; engine vibrates like hell; ran @ 2600 rpms for about 45 minutes; then, just as we got to the harbour; all 4 cyl kick in, 4500 rpms; ran fine to harbour, while idled into harbour; could hear the 2 cyl kick in and out.

All four cyl firing fine after pulling boat out of water.

Both times the engine has cut back, been in about 3 - 4 foot seas, rough water, couldn't work on engine out in the water; ran fine on 9-26-07 test run; smooth water. Checked all connections; can't find any loose connections that maybe affected by rough seas!!!

I am at my wits end......

sound like you have a power pack that is failing, or a wire that is shorting. check stator,

A service manual will tell you how to do a running test on each ignition component using a peak reading volt meter. That will find a problem like this very quickly.

Unfortnuately the problem only seems to occur when I am out on the water, particularly in rough seas, where working on the motor is not a viable option. When it's on the trailer or in calm waters, motor performs fine...leads me to believe there is a loose connection that I can't locate.... aggravating, to say the least...

plus the fact that I am not a mechanic nor mechanically inclined....I am a "parts replacer" and now I don't know which part to replace.....

rudedude, you are correct, fishing around Cat Island and Horn Island. I am in Vancleave, pulling my hair out.....

Unrelated, but I'm getting a kick out of the concept of 3-4 feet being rough seas.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

hehehehe, inside the islands, in the Mississippi Sound, in a 19 ft boat, 2-4 ft is about as rough as we get......

Being only on one bank like you said, try the following checks. Do you have a multi meter and DVA meter, or DVA attachment for the multimeter? Check the stator and trigger resistance and DVA output as given below for both banks:

Wire Color: Check to Wire Color :Resistance : DVA Reading

Brown wire: Brown/Yellow wire: 450-550 :150V or more Connected
White wire :Blue wire :38-42: 0.6V or more Connected
White wire :Green wire :38-42: 0.6V or more Connected

NOTE: Also check the DVA readings to engine ground from each brown wire and compare the readings. If one wire reads low while connected to the pack, swap the connections and see if the low reading stays on the same stator wire. If it does, the stator is bad.

Off the west-coast of Vancouver Island 4 feet is a calm day, here in Puget Sound it's a moderate chop. It's all what your used to.
