Mercruiser Trim/Tilt Problems

I have a 98 Sea Ray SD 240 with a Mercruiser/5.0 litre. The Trim and tilt is intermittent. When it quits both trim and trailer switches on the controls are intermittent - mostly dead. I followed a troubleshooting guide to narrow down the problem. Jumping hot to Blue and Green leads on the pump works. Jumping 2 pins on the connector coming off pump works one time, the next time no. Should I just change out the solonoid first since they are fairly cheap anyway and go from there? Or does it sound like a switch problem. How likely are the trim and trailer switches to both be bad? Are they connected together in the control handle?

Re: Mercruiser Trim/Tilt Problems

Just a suggestion, there is a live wire that goes to the trim switch, it then gets switched to the green/blue wires (by the trim switch) to make the motor raise or lower the outdrive. The live wire is connected to a fuse at the trim pump. On my unit the fuse holder had gone all rusty causing an intermittent feed which meant the trim control became intermitent. My fuse was mounted on the trim unit (was an inline fuse holder) so you might want to check that first.. Much cheaper and easier than changing relays..

Re: Mercruiser Trim/Tilt Problems

Changing relays isn't going to help if they aren't getting power from the helm switches., either the 3 pin connector at the trim pump or the 20A fuse on the trim pump is probably your problem.
Not sure what "Troubleshooting Guide" you were using, but here is a link to the oem service manual
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14notice.pdf
Go to the troubleshooting section, also on page 1C-16 is a wiring diagram.
