Defective warning buzzer??

I suspect the warning buzzer is bad. 1991 60 hp Evinrude. I have 12 volts to the purple wire and when I ground the tan wire I get nothing. I have read on the forum about the Radio Shack replacement buzzer. The Question is What dose the 3 wire do? It appears to go to a solenoid. Would this be the one that chirps when you turn the key? I can live without that but want the overheat sensor to work. The vro is disconnected. Any input would be really helpful!!!!

The 3 wire horn has the self test feature. You may think you don't need it but it's a really good feature. They put it there for a reason.

Have you tested the overheat function?

All I have tested is the buzzer. How do you test the overheat? Thanks

Turn the key on and ground the harness side of the wire going to the heat sensor.

Re: Defective warning buzzer??

Heat switches, installed in each cylinder head, are in series with a "HOT" warning horn in the remote control box. Should an irregularity develop in the cooling system and cause abnormal water jacket temperatures, the switches close the warning circuit. A switch may be checked by submerging it in hot oil. Using a test light to check the contacts and a thermometer to check oil temp., the contacts should close at a temp of 211 F + or - 6 and open at 175deg F plus or minus 7. Dhadley will be able to verify these stats, I believe they are correct for your motor.

To remove switches for testing, pull back insulating sleeves and open knife terminal connections. Remove cylinder head covers and switches. On installation, clean gasket surfaces thoroughly. Apply gasket sealing compound lightly to both gasket surfaces. Also apply the same sealing compound to top surface of heat switch grommet and again after cover has been installed. Install cylinder head cover using a new gasket. Reconnect heat switch leads and slide insulating sleeves over connections.

I did that test. Thats what lead me to the defective horn. I searched Iboats parts but did not find a self testing switch. Am I on the right track?

Does that involve retorking(spell check) the heads? I have no reason to suspeck they are bad and let sleeping dogs lie comes to mind. It's a 1991 60 hp Rude with low hrs. Compression 120 exact on all 3. Boat and motor (new to me) mint condition. peeled stickers off and were 5 and 6 yrs apart I guess alot of garage time> Thanks for the input.

Re: Defective warning buzzer??

Before the self testing three wire horn, there was a slot above the key into which you could insert another key to test the horn.

When the three wire horns came out the slot was abandoned and the horn sounded one beep when you turned the key to the run position.

If the horn will not sound when the key is on and the tan wire at the control side is grounded to the block, then the horn is bad or the wiring is bad. There would be no reason whatever to check the temperature switch based on that information.

Thanks ezeke

I was sthinking about a seperate self test push button switch to ground the tan wire. only because I have one in the shop. and could save the 50 bucks to pour in the hole in the water for something else.
I Can't seem to find a generic 3 wire switch anywhere. Is there one out there that I'am missing?

Re: Defective warning buzzer??

In both New York and Massachusetts, I found Radio Shack's small 12 volt warning horns in one of the drawers where the miscellaneous connectio parts are kept. They had a variety of them from a steady high pitch to ones that sound like a truck backing up. They are in the range of 4 or 5 dollars each. I don't think they will last very long in a marine environment, but they will work OK.

I once rigged a boat horn to be used both as a regular horn and overheat warning horn - just takes an extra set of wires and you can test it with the horn button. . The one shown here at iboats should work since it only draws three amps: http://www.iboats.com/AFI_Mini_Blas...d.217508--list_time.1192022189--view_id.38346

Thanks to all who replied. In the end I went to Oriellys and got a back up warning horn. 7 bucks. It appears to be as water tight as the original. although slightly larger. I also added a seperate self test switch, marine type for another 7 bucks. Thought I go whole hog! Thanks again guys

Be aware that a substitute horn instead of the factory one may draw more current and that could damage the warning system electronics inside the "VRO" pump and inside the oil tank pickup assembly. These electronics set the NO OIL pulsing tone and the LOW OIL beep every 30 seconds or so.
