I have a 50 hp 1973 rude set up for cable steering and throttlin, is there a way to convert to stern steer, I can live with the trottle, heck it might even be better. Can I just attach a handle on the front and take off?:)

That engine, to my knowledge, was never made as a "tiller" model. Even if it were, parts would be scarce or non existant.

You can attach a steering handle to the tiller already there. The "tiller" is the part that the current cable set up attaches to. You'll have to do something else with gear and throttle functions.

you will also have to deal with the wiring harness. i personally would not do it for safety reasons. don't know what water police would think about it.

Re: Cable steer to stern steer?

If I were to put the throttle control and ignition back next to the back seat, it would be in easy reach while steering. I could also put a dead man switch on it for safety sake. Would there be any problem with the motor torqueing under load, does a stearn steer have some sort of absorber for this, or are they free to move back and forth also? the boat I am putting this on is about 16' v hull 1957 Chrestliner aluminum, I'm not sure what it is rated for. It has a 35 hp big twin on it right now it is a 1959 model. It runs, I think, I know my 50 runs and is dependable. That is why I want the change.

use ezglide stick steering if it is a fishing style open boat. you will have a lot of torque, and i will turn freely. i've had that motor in the past.
